Hi,

I have recently bought a Silver top 20 Valve for my '82 twincam which also came with a 5 speed box. I had planned on using my original box but now I'm interested in using the silvertop box. I assume this has been done/tried before but I can't find any info on it.

What do others using a 20valve use?

Is it worth using the 20Valve box?

Also is the clutch the same as any aus spec corolla? Can it and/or the flywheel be used with my original box?

I have searched the web (and this site) but can't find what I am after, so I thought I would ask some questions...

Thanks for you help,

Jarrad

The spline on the 20V clutch is larger than the AE82/AE92 version. It'll also be 212 not 200mm like your AE82 clutch. You'll need an AE92 clutch kit to use the 20V flywheel on your AE82 with the AE82 box. With the 20V box, I've heard that the selectors need a bit of work to make them mate up properly, but other than that it'll fit it ok. There's a chance that there won't be a cable speedo drive on the 20V box too, might be worth a look. What I'm not sure of is whether the CV's will bolt up, or whether the width of the AE101 is the same as an AE82. I'm sure if you google the widths of the two cars you'll come up with an answer. There's piles of people on twincam.org that have done this conversion, might be worth posting there for more help.

Thanks very much Beerhead, answered all of my questions.

I can tell you that the 20valve box uses equal length drive shafts, so I will need custom ones made up according to the drive shaft place I went to. I'm thinking I will just use my existing box with the new engine, it should hold up ok?

Just another question, will the bigport flywheel bolt up to the 20valve engine? Or would I be better off using the larger diameter flywheel?

Also, is it the AE92 clutch from the 4age engine thet needs to be used? I am assuming they changed the flywheel diameter to the larger one in this model?

Thanks again for you help.

Hello there,

I've just recently finished puttin a 20v in my AE82 and i found the original gearbox when bolted up didn't go into reverse, so i went out and bought a 20v gearbox and the thing just bolted straight in no worries at all selectors drive shafts and all lined up perfect :)

Yeah was a box out of an AE101, when i pulled the original motor out i just unbolted the drive shafts and when the 20v went in perfect line up. guess it might be different for different models

Cheers for that,

I have just had to replace my driveshafts so I might as well get some use out of them. I am going to use the 20valve flywheel with the ae92 clutch and mate them up to my standard box. As I'm not having a complete 20valve engine as such I don't really need the 20 valve box, I'm pretty much going to end up with a high comp, high reving bigport engine, so my box will be just fine.

I have an AE82 with a 20v and am using a GZE LSD with a GZE flywheel. Has GZE equal length drive shafts. Had to do mod on gearbox end mounting bracket and lower rear mount but everything else fitted up fine. I also found an earlier speedo drive which used the original speedo cable. The box and shafts are a bit heavier but also stronger.

1 of my AE82's is running a 4AGE 16v bigport with a 20v 5spd box, not sure what they had to do to put it in there but it worked fine also 1 of my mates was running a 6 spd box on his AE82 4AGE 16v, i will be taking the motor and box out of it shortly so i will get some pics and compare them with my 4AGE with a 16v box.
