Why does it seem that everyone has something against commodore v6's? Everytime I see it mentioned, someone comes out and bags them, why? They're not a bad engine considering they're based on a 40-odd year old design

Might be that they are every where as the name implies commonwhore plus ive herd nothing but bad news about commodores and and some model falcons, But i have never owned one personaly and probably never will. ;)

There is nothing wrong with them... just, they really f@$kin don't suit a corolla if your looking for handling, but by f@$k they make good burnout cars..

Pretty much every second car at the Narrogin Revheads is powered by a Ecotec V6, because they're cheap, simple, and f@$kin hard to blow up.

You do realise this is a corolla site, don't you?

yea the commodore v6 isnt a bad motor, ive owned two v6 vn's and one of the was an s pack and my parents own a vn wagon and the only thing that seems to go after a while is the box, and yes they do make great burnout cars

Not too bad for a 40-year old design.................yeah, but it's still a 40-year old design. It'd be like Toyota still using the K-series in Corollas and Echos.

Bad points:

Pushrod

2v/cylinder

poor top end (due to pushrod, 2v)

thrashy, sounds like a noisy vacuum cleaner

low power/L

rough

poor fuel consumption

Good points:

cheap

shitload of spare and aftermarket parts

relatively reliable

decent torque (but could be much better, look at what Ford get with only 200cc more)

The best six cylinder Commodore ran a Jap-designed motor. The best Commodore motor would have to be one of the V8's. Six litres in a family car? That's pretty damn cool, and you won't get it anywhere else in the world anymore.

It could be worse, he could own a VB Commodore
With a Starfire Motor in it?

the Starfire 1.9L was in the VC-VH models, and no, I don't own or drive a commodore.

And yes, I do realise it is a corolla forum, but I was thinking of putting one in my ke70.

coz we like small motors that make decent horses per litre

but if you do the same to a larger engine as you do to a small engine, you can make a crap load more power/torque. Eddy Tassone got 1500hp out of 383ci (6.2L)

If I was to put a 6 cyl into a corolla it'd be a 1JZ on an aftermarket computer. In such a small car it'd be a weapon, damn a 1ggte is pleanty powerful enough. By all means throw an eco-tech in if you're really keen, been done a few times now, I just don't think the power delivery is very good for a small car.

thery arent bad for a 40year old engine, thats right.. they wernt anything special back then either! so why did the dumb arses at holden drop the best engine they ever had (RB30) for that stinker of an engine.

they make great burnouts in light cars. they are so heavy, in a small car (eg gemi, rolla etc) the tail of the car is nearly off the ground.. and they make good torque down low.

you wanna know what makes the engine half decent in stock form?? its the ECU. thats its saving grace. the heads arent all that bad for that engine, the bottom end is the shitter though. rods tend to fail at around 5500-6000 depending on the engine, and they had to run a balancing shaft to save money so they didnt have to balance the internals. :D

then you talk about eddie tassones car. hardly a buick V6 now is it?? actually how much of that engine is genuine holden? you have to expect that at those sorts of power levels though.

have you read up about that engine and how it makes its power delivery? hardly drivable me thinks.that car is a race/grenade car only

if you want a nice bigish capacity engine that will make decent grunt, how about a rover/leyland all alloy V8? they will EASILY make the grunt you crave, without upsetting the chassis so much, piece of pie to get parts for.. and you your a GM lover, technically they are GM ish. it was a buick designed engine that they dropped as they couldnt produce the engine cost effectively.

ill get off my soapbox now.. :)

Because like the buick engine...that wasnt their design either.

Sooo??? There are 2JZs with less than half that capacity making the same power. 241hp/litre vs 500hp/litre.
