TOMsGPTurbo Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 Hey guys, I'm gonna buy some coil overs for my car, and I was wondering what can I do to them, can i take them apart and use different springs? Can I put different strut tops in? can I put different shockies in? Whats possible? My dream would be to have height adjustable, with damper and rebound adjust. Quote
mumblezzz Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 All of the above. I love having coilovers. Slammed on the street and jacked up for khanacross etc. Tons of options in ragard to spring rates. With camber top you can adjust camber easily and as long as the measurements are correct in regard to strut length, stroke etc there are heaps of options for shocks. Quote
andrew Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 i would love coilovers, but money is a prob Quote
Teddy Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 * but money is a prob * ya, i know that feeling... Quote
andrew Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 yup. i lost my daytime job so not even being able to pay rent sort off puts the cars of for a while Quote
TOMsGPTurbo Posted June 9, 2004 Author Report Posted June 9, 2004 Andrew, check www.jobs.qld.gov.au - get a gov job you won't loose that ;) OK, umm I ask about the strut tops cause apparently Starlet GT ones won't fit my car but if I just put my strut tops on the coil overs it will be a perfect fit. Would that be hard to do? is the coil over one bit? Quote
andrew Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 this is not hard at all. just comress the spring and remove the strut top (the bolt on the very top), then put your strut top back on. but definatley compress the spring or you will get very sore fingers! and thanks for the job site ;) Quote
mumblezzz Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 Hehe my coilover springs arent captive but my rears are??? Go figure. Quote
demuire Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 Make sure you use a spring compressor when compressing the spring. The force at which the top spring seat can come off when you release the bolt is quite phenomenal, the first time I did this I didn't use a spring compressor (just a clamp to initially compress it) and pointed it away from me and when it let go the spring seat flew straight across the garage, bounced back and came all the way back to me. If that had hit my head or some other part of me it probably would have done some serious damage... Also this will only work if your strut tops will actually fit (well) on the Starlet GT shock shafts. Paul: Prob cause you have more travel in your front. To fix this (and to be more legal) you can put in helper springs to keep it captive, or get shorter stroke shocks, or get longer (and probably softer) springs. Quote
