Dan Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 (edited) Well, to cut a long story short, I've found a AE92 (?, its a 92 model) with a 20v in it for a price that I consider to be reasonably cheap for the car at hand... and I'm looking at purchasing it. The specs are as follows; - 20v motor, silvertop bottom end with blacktop head, manifold, throttle bodies. Apparently he used the silvertop bottom end as he didn't like the thickness of the blacktop rods, and preferred the compression ratio (11:1 to 10:1, or perhaps it was the other way around) of the silvertop. Backed by a standard 4AGE Blacktop 5 speed. - Super lows all round, Boge Turbo struts fitted up front and GT Munroe struts out back. Strut brace fitted. - Front discs have been upgraded to AE82 Twincam discs. - 17x7 'Gmax' shadow chrome rims with 205's The car is registered in WA (no problem about RWC or anything upon transfer). Doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it, the car is in overall good condition except for a small dent on one of the front guards and some buggered boot plastics. Boot plastics isn't a problem, front guard isn't too much of a problem. Basically, before I jump head first into this, I want to know how much these cars are worth. I know that only a year ago we purchased a standard 92 model 4af powered sedan for 3,800; which was a good deal at the time.. hence my interest in it. I also know that a 20V SX was recently purchased by someone I know for 6500. Driveshafts both been replaced this year. Cheers in advance, Dan. Edited August 1, 2006 by Dan Quote
ancullen Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 According to drive.com.au, a 1992 Corolla Seca SX (the one with the 100kW 4A-GE) is worth $3600-4400 in a private sale, $3200-4000 as a trade-in, or $5900-7080 from a dealer. As this is a modified car, basically it comes down to how much it is worth to you. If you think it's a fair price, and you're going to be happy with it, then buy it. If you've got any doubts, then maybe you should reconsider, or at least get the seller to reduce the price. Looks pretty okay to me though. As for the engine, the silvertop had 10.5:1 compression and AFM, the blacktop had 11.0:1 and MAP. Apparently the silvertop did have better rods, but I don't know if the compression ratio of the blacktop changed from the silvertop through different pistons or the different head. If the pistons were the same then you should have the ultimate factory-bits 4A-GE 20v. If not, then you won't have as much power as a standard blacktop. Quote
ancullen Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 UPDATE: According to Billzilla's site, the blacktop head has less squish area than the silvertop's, so presumably has higher compression, meaning that the pistons are probably the same. So the engine in this AE92 is goood. Quote
Dan Posted August 1, 2006 Author Report Posted August 1, 2006 Hmmm, thats food for thought. This bloke reckons that he's spent $10k on the car. It means nothing to me, but its an indication of what hes done. I'm going to have a chat to my old man about it when he gets home tomorrow and arrange to go and have a look at it. Seems to be an oppurtunity too good to miss. Dan. Quote
ancullen Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 I was told that $15,000 was spent on building my car, but I'll be buggered if I can find where it was spent. :lock_folder: The AE92 is definitely worth considering, but do test drive it first. I've tried out an AE92 and an AE82 and just didn't like the handling on them. To wallowy. Then again, the ZZE122 is pretty shitty too. Quote
Dan Posted August 2, 2006 Author Report Posted August 2, 2006 Well, how do you think this car sounds for $3,000 Quote
ancullen Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 I'd go for it for that price. Sounds pretty good, and if it's all in good condition (especially the motor), then why not? Quote
Dan Posted August 2, 2006 Author Report Posted August 2, 2006 :lock_folder: Exactly my point. Currently arranging to go and see it this weekend. Quote
ancullen Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 If it's all good, it should be a fun, quick little ride. Has the suspension/brakes been modified at all? Would be really quick with some low springs, beefed up swaybars, and brakes from a later model Corolla (don't know which ones would fit though). Quote
Dan Posted August 2, 2006 Author Report Posted August 2, 2006 (edited) Yeah, its got Superlows all round, Boge Turbo struts up front and GT Munroes out back. A strut brace has been fitted also. As for the brakes, AE82 Twincam discs and single piston calipers have also been fitted. Edited August 2, 2006 by Dan Quote
