Teddy Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 Hey all Well, i wanta get my cams - i wanta do motorsport, and nothings gona stop me ! So, ive been reading - and ive come up with this. Motor sport i wanta do... - Motorkhanas and Khanacross - CAMS level 2NS licence - Circuit racing - CAMS level 2S licence - Speed events (Hillclimb, Sprints, etc.) - C3 licence Cost = Alot. So, I'm thinking for a start, ill just get the 2NS licence - which costs $22 for a junor (under 17). (Cams 2NS / 2S Applicaion Form) They say u need an affiliated club, so ive had a look and for the motorkhanas, ive chosen the HOLDEN SPORTING CAR CLUB OF QLD INC - HSSCOQ - they look like a keen bunch, and then i saw this and it put a verrryyy big smile on my dial !- (what a small world..!:)) :) !!!! Inspiration just got noted up 10 points :) ! hehehehhe Date for when i wanta do this : in 2 months, when i have my P's so i can get my car to the events (Motorkhanas and Khanacross's) - mum would freak if she watched me, and I'm not too sure how dad would take it, so only 2 months to go!) I spoze i could get it these holidays... 3/4 weeks, but then i couldnt use it for a little while lol ! Any 1 wanta give me some tips / hints / yes / no's etc? Thanks all, and hopefully 1 day ull me ME in those photos :D :S Quote
Super Jamie Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 DO IT! the earlier the better, amateur racing is one of the best ways to improve your driving skill in a controlled safe environment, and get to learn about your car and how to handle it and improve it most effectively. much better you stuff up on a motorkhana track (almost zero chance of doing any serious damage) than on the street (real chance of hurting yourself, other people and their property) even a bodyrolling stock engined car can be fun. fook and doug reckon half-shagged suspension is good to start out with, as it's much more forgiving. all you pretty much need to do is make sure your car is roadworthy at the time of the event, as you'll get inspected. fire extinguisher and first aid kit are a must it also has the tendancy to teach people respect for the road, so while all your schoolmates are all obsessed with burnouts in dad's v6 commodore, you'll probably drive around sensibly, be perfectly happy with yourself, and can't stop thinking about the next track day Quote
Teddy Posted May 20, 2004 Author Report Posted May 20, 2004 "it also has the tendancy to teach people respect for the road, so while all your schoolmates are all obsessed with burnouts in dad's v6 commodore, you'll probably drive around sensibly, be perfectly happy with yourself, and can't stop thinking about the next track day" - wow - its as tho u had my brain up on Win VNC :) !! thats really true ! ! ! u really are super-jamie lol Quote
mumblezzz Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 Yeah, I find regular track events help get it all out of the system. So you're less inclined to do stupid shit on the street. Quote
Teddy Posted May 20, 2004 Author Report Posted May 20, 2004 i am yet to lean the true meaning of the phrase "Stupid Shit on the street" lol Hopefullly i don't learn it for a while yet :) Quote
mumblezzz Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 My car is the result of "stupid shit" on the street and "dodgy driver" behind the wheel. Quote
Teddy Posted May 20, 2004 Author Report Posted May 20, 2004 "its still good!" *thinks back 2 last mt cotton skid pan night with me in the car* *very big cheezy grin* :) Quote
demuire Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 Umm... A few good valid points, and a few not-so-valid points... First of all, where to start? Teddy: You've got your licences wrong a little. Circuit racing you'll need a C level licence. a) they aren't cheap b) circuit racing isn't cheap. It'll probably be awhile before you even need to look at this category. To do any sort of speed events you will need a 2S licence (or 2SJ perhaps in your case - how old exactly are you? Remember that you have to be under 18 on the day of the event and not on the day you get your licence), speed events include spints, hillclimbs etc. Or, if you're only planning on doing motorkhana and khanacross then you can get away with a 2NS (or 2NSJ). Keep in mind that some touring road events such as the Queensland Challenge require a 2S (or 2SJ) licence. If I were in your shoes I'd get a 2S (or 2SJ) licence, just gives you a few more options of events for not much more money. Also keep in mind that you only really need 1 licence, as in - if you get a 2S, it is "higher" than a 2NS so you can do all 2NS events. Not 100% sure if this applies to C level licences, I would imagine so. You also only need to be a member of 1 CAMS affiliated club. So no, you don't need to join 1 club for each sort of event. I'm a member of HSCCQ, they are a pretty good bunch and are definately big into motorkhanas. Cheap(ish) too for membership, Haikal just got his last night. Next - I do hope you remember (it has been mentioned quite a few times before) that you don't need to actually have a drivers licence to compete unless you are required to drive on public roads. In otherwords, for motorkhanas and khanacrosses, as long as you know how to get your car to move, turn and stop (fast or slow, doesn't matter), you're fine to compete. In fact there's a rather attractive young lady who's dad competes, and she's just started competing too :S She goes real slow, being a beginner and all that, but she still has a bucketload of fun, and that's what's important. Next motorkhana to put in your diary: June 20th. So if you can, try to get your licence before then and see if you can get your car there somehow or convince someone to let you drive theirs. It's at the Broadwater Car Park at Southport. The one after that is at Urbanville I think which is a fair hike. But I think we (HSCCQ) are trying to plan another one at Willowbank sometime before then, not a Queensland Series but just a club motorkhana. A bit smaller, less competitors probably, a bit more personal, just as much fun. Also, for motorkhana your car doesn't *strictly* need to be roadworthy. It doesn't even need to be registered. Just safe - as in your steering is fine, seats fine, brakes fine etc. I've seen cars with huge rust holes in the boot floor and half the interior missing pass scrutineering... You also don't *need* a fire extinguisher and first aid kit for non-speed events like motorkhana, although it isn't a bad idea to have one. Jamie: if only you'd practice what you preach. You should try to get yourself into some grassroots motorsport, instead of relying on your friends to take you there. When I first started I knew absolutely nobody, I just turned up and had some fun. Learnt a lot along the way, met a lot of people along the way. And still learning, and meeting. Whether it's a motorkhana, khanacross, hillclimb or just a simple public sprint, you should give something a go. Hillclimbs are probably a bit in the deep end to jump in I recon, much higher speeds involved and far less room for error as far as I can tell. Softer suspension IS easier to drive on, and will teach you a lot more. That's why I keep saying "don't worry about beefing up your car, adding lots of bling, making your suspension fulli sik and getting that extra 20kW, just go out and have fun". Well, actually Rob was the one who told me that, and now I carry the message on :D In fact, if you're one of those Initial D fans then that should be even more drilled into you. If you learn to drive in a shitta of a car, the car is easier to handle, slower and essentially you'll build up your skills to win the race. Compare that to someone who basically goes out in a fulli sik car and relies on his car to win, he'll never learn a thing. Take away the car, and he is nothing. Also, stiffer suspension is harder to learn with because the car will "talk to you" a lot less, and will be a lot more snappy. Remember that a lot about winning is about the skill of the driver. The car does help, but isn't everything. That's why you pop :) into virtually any car and I'd bet he'd pedal it faster than you can ever imagine. mumblezz: yup, regular motorsport does tend to keep the right foot in control on the street :) *edit* FAR OUT THAT WAS LONG!!! Teddy Posted May 20, 2004 Author Report Posted May 20, 2004 WOW! THANKS FOOK!!! Ok, sorry if i screwed up the lisences - i just copyed and paisted from the cams web page - I'm assuming its outa date. Yup, i know about the drivers lisence thing, now that u say June 20 - ahhh i think i might get it b 4 then :) i really like ure idea about the stock car / responce / etc. I wouldnt call my self an initial D Fan, i only realized what it actually was not too long ago (*coff Sprinter @ Arcade := Crazy handeling Coff*) - h hum Anway! I ment to say that circuite racing was going to be laaatttteeerrr ooonnn down the track. Great post fook, thanks again - its really usefull stuff !! Teddy oh and I'm 17 atm (birthday was 6th Apr) :S Quote
Redwarf Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 Pressed the wrong god damn button and now I have to start again... it was a long one too. Teddy, you'd've been impressed. :) In the time it's taken me to bugger this up, Fook has written everything I wanted to say anyway. A couple of points, yes a 2S will let you do 2NS events, the same as my National Rally lets me do any 2S events. If Teddy is under 18, he will have to get his parent/ gaurdian to sign the entry form. I don't think he's restricted in doing any events, just as long as the form is signed. No, I won't be your gaurdian for the day. :) June 20th, Broadwater carpark, should be a hoot. Bringing Dwarf if still in one piece after Rally of Q. If not will try to scab ride in something else. Can provide trailer.... :S Fook is right. If you wait until your car is "ready", you may never make it out there. Nobody is going to laugh at you, quite the opposite. You have made the effort, and are therefore doing what a lot of people only ever talk about. You'll never go wrong, and there will always be an abundance of people to help if something does go wrong, or if you just need some advise. I have never known anybody in twelve years to be left stuck at an event. I started off in a crappy old red KE25, that was my girlfriend (now wife's) first car, with dodgy second hand suspension, smokey 3K and borrowed tyres. Car now features below. Gotta start somewhere. As for those photos above, nostalgia lane... Photo A: Baileys Powerlines Rally 2001, Imbil. You can tell it's an old shot due to the fact there is no signwriting on the car. Photo B: KCF Rnd 2 2002. Great stetch of road, you can see where it goes down the valley. We ran it coming up the valley on Saturday. One of those sweeping lefts is where I came unstuck in the Stanza. (Long 4 left into 2 right don't cut, no clutch hydraulics, can't find second, no drive through corner, slap Stanza into embankment. Still got another 2 and a half stages in before the diff let go though...:D ) Teddy, if you need any help with the parents, I may be respectable enough for them for me to try and help. I'm only a phone call away.... or an email. This has just taken me about three hours.... R 04170009_vi.jpe Quote
demuire Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 Poor Rob :S And yes that one took me awhile too, I actually had to look up a few things while writing it (you'd think I'd know the book by heart now, I've been glancing at it everywhere I go and I've referred to that section a billion times now) If you get stuck out with no car for Broadwater, if the white car is running you can have a drive. It owes you one anyway :) The car would have done 3 weekends of trashing in a row prior to that though, and it does seem to have a knack for breaking bits (gearbox still broken), so I really do hope it's still running for the event. Otherwise I guess I'll either have to run Pinky (if it is running, which at the current rate is doubtful) or try to scab a drive in something else too. Quote
Teddy Posted May 20, 2004 Author Report Posted May 20, 2004 Cheers rob, u always put a smile on my dial ! i can't wait to get into some motor sport ! - Next motorkhana's my target - To Drive :) Hopefully by then ill have enough expirence to drive down there (with some 1 else in the car : I'm still on My L's) - otherwize, ill have 2 re-think my options. Next step - Join HSSCOQ - Then to go get my cams 2S ! Sweet - I'm Excited !!!!!!!! Quote
demuire Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 When you join HSCCQ you can also get your CAMS licence at the same time. That's what Haikal did. I think all up it will cost you $123 or something like that. Tell you what, come for the HSCCQ club meeting next Wednesday night. I think it's at 7.30, but I really can't remember. Meet some people, join the club, get your membership etc. It's at the CAMS office at Milton. Quote
