djbausch Posted September 20, 2024 Report Posted September 20, 2024 Hey rolla guru's So I got an ae82 recently 86' with a 4ac motor 70k km on the odo and I can't get the thing to idle for more than a minute once it starts up. It hadn't been started for over 2 years I'm thinking it's probably the idle jet and I'm gonna pull the carb apart this weekend to give it a bash with carb cleaner. If that doesn't work tho I'm wondering if I can just whack a 4af carbie on to replace it as they are dead cheap on ebay. Anybody had any experience with this? Quote
altezzaclub Posted September 20, 2024 Report Posted September 20, 2024 You don't want to put a whole 4AFE motor in there? It would be a great upgrade.. Hopefully a clean will fix it as you'd need to try the 4AFC carb on it to see if the bolt-holes line up and the cables fit. If you have a 4AFC carb there just pull the old one off and clean them both on the bench, then fit the one with the least worn throttle shaft. Quote
ke70dave Posted September 22, 2024 Report Posted September 22, 2024 (edited) Rebuild the carby, don't go replacing it with an oddball carb. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/223140575858 Edited September 22, 2024 by ke70dave Quote

I was thinking I might go a 4age silvertop eventually but since she only has 70k on the odo I wanted to use it as a run around first Quote

But then if I'm spending $200 why not get a procarb performance upgrade kit for $600 https://procarb.com.au/toyota-4ac-4afc-fajs-32-36-dgev-performance-upgrade/ but then if I'm spending six hundred why not get a webber for $800 but then if I'm spending $800 why not try and hunt down a cheap 4AGE and I think and think and the car just sits there. altezzaclub Posted September 23, 2024 Report Posted September 23, 2024 Lol!...and that's the way it goes with all car modifications! The 4AC is a single cam driving 8valves, and a 4AFE a twin cam 16valve but with only one cam on the belt and the second cam is gear driven off the first?? So 57KW to 80KW I jumped from 4K to 4AGE like a lot of guys on here and never saw a 4AFE. Quote

They guy said it was a 4ac but it had the red writing 1600 toyota on the top and looked more like a twin cam with the spark plugs down the middle of the rocker cover "If it's free it's for me" Edited September 23, 2024 by djbausch Quote
altezzaclub Posted September 23, 2024 Report Posted September 23, 2024 A walk around a wrecker's yard is always educational. say you looked at all the 4AFEs.. Parts that are missing show model faults, so if there are distributors missing off a few, or throttle bodies, or heads, you know what the model faults are. They're a very common & reliable motor, but old and worn out I'd expect. Mind you, that price just can't be beaten, if it runs its good! Quote
