Taz_Rx Posted July 4, 2006 Report Posted July 4, 2006 Hi Matt, Got the cam yesterday. Changing a cam is something I have never done before and have no real idea how!! Do you think its something that I should try doing myself, and that I would not have much trouble doing, cause I am somewhat mechanically knowledgable?? Or should I just take it to a mechanic?? If you thing that I may be able to do it myself, would you be able to give me a bit of run down on what is involved btw, did you do this whole 202 push rod thing that I have read about or just used the standard ones?? thanks, Si. ***since this msg is now a thread not a PM, if someone else can explain the the cam swap for me that'd be great!!??*** Quote
Falken_KE30 Posted July 4, 2006 Report Posted July 4, 2006 have wondered myself how you change the cam over in a 3k!! In a gemini motor its easy, its a SOHC HAHA Quote
Taz_Rx Posted July 4, 2006 Author Report Posted July 4, 2006 hey did you try sending me a PM the other day?? cause I had the email notification, and said it was you, but didn't have a PM!! Quote

Probably best to do it the way most have done it.I am assuming that this is a 5K engine is it. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted July 4, 2006 Author Report Posted July 4, 2006 no its a 4k, thats why I checked that the 4/5k cams were the same'ish before I bought it!! whats "the way most do it"?? Quote

Yeah the cams are the same, its just I'm not sure about whether the lifters will fit. Those lifters are for a 5K as a replacement for the hydraulic ones. whats "the way most do it"?? ,i think that they use datsun 1200 pushrods and STD rocker gear. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted July 4, 2006 Author Report Posted July 4, 2006 (edited) just had a read through a bit of the FAQ. found the bit about the 5k's having hydraulic and 4k's already having solids. so I could just use the standard 4k solid lifter?? ok, so theres info there about degreeing the cam, I just wanna know a little more about swapping them. ie, is there bearings on each end that need to be pressed on and off? do I need to remove the lifters before taking the cam out so they don't all drop into the sump or something?? etc etc...... jeez, gimme a bridge port anyday!!!! :D Edited July 4, 2006 by Taz_Rx Quote

Yes you will need to remove the lifters so they don't fall in the sump.So take them out and to an engine reco shop and ask them to face them for you ,prolly cost $2 or $3 each maybe???. I wouldnt bother with the degree thing as you have no way of changing it even if it is slightly out, just line it up dot to dot. Its easy job mate, the hardest bit might be getting the lifters out past the head if the casting is too thick Quote
Xany Posted July 4, 2006 Report Posted July 4, 2006 4K lifters are too small to use in a 5K as solids.... you have to find the right solid lifter by measuring the diametre and length and matching that to a chev lifter of the same sort. Then you can use A12 Datsun pushrods and 4k rocker gear to complete the conversion Quote

Then he will do the pushrod bit and use his STD rocker gear. AND if he wants i will buy the lifters back, cause i thought he had a 5K. . Edited July 4, 2006 by madrolla68 Quote
Taz_Rx Posted July 5, 2006 Author Report Posted July 5, 2006 you don't have to buy them back if you don't need them!!! I'll just sell them on here for what I paid for them if they are no use to you matt!!! I'm sure someone with be putting a new cam in a 5k and will want solids sooner or later. lemme know. :abuse: so is there any reason why I can't just use the cam, my 4k lifters, refaced and just the standard push rods??? I spoke an old skool mechanic yesterday who I know quite well and he is going to do it for me, with my assistance, and also show me the finer points of "cammage"!!! Quote

Youll be fine. I wouldnt mind buying them back @ $50 plus postage . Let me know. Quote
