turbo_rolla Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 Hey mate, I'm in the same boat as you with the ke70 looking for a 5k upgrade. I'm going to check out a 5k on the weekend (if it is still where its supposed to be :hmm:). If there i'll grab it, and will be able to let ya know in about oh, 3-4 months probably how it goes ;) Gotta get my suspension in first! Like the other guys said, you should notice a bit of an increase in torque (that's what I'm hoping for atleast), but it aint gonna go like a 4age or anything  Good luck with it if you decide to go through with it! :jamie: In the meantime, these may wet your appetite (i beleive they are 5k's):    Quote
mitch13 Posted June 28, 2006 Author Report Posted June 28, 2006 Definately gonna do it just got get parts. Where did u find the 5K you are looking at? Should i go to a wrecker or just keep posting? Quote
Felix Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 (edited) that first pic is my current motor. ultimately you shouldn't expect much more power from a 5k than what you would from a 4k. they both are pretty much airflow limited by the same sized valves and a non-xflow head design. i have experienced this myself from running similarly built 4k and 5k engines. the 5k will make more torque and be quicker (more area under the curve). in a lightweight ke1x it will be fairly quick. even my missus has been known to pull out and overtake a line of 5 cars in country driving. ;) if you can set up a 5k cheap, then go for it. other wise the money spent would be maybe best put towards a conversion. Teddy Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 Free punt for Chris and his 7k - if you want to spend a little bit, but not as much as to get all the parts together for a 4age conversion, why not put a 7k in your car? Its got everything going for it ;) I need to get some video footage up of ryans corolla with a 7k once its running, it will put a few smiles on a few faces :jamie: Quote
Xany Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 Second Pic is my engine that was fully rebuilt about 2 years ago....still going strong ;). The head you see on it is a 3K bigport head, you wont get much bigger ports than that in a K engine head....those are just about the limit. I found that building my own engine, gave me alot more insight into what goes where and how to make more power....When i joined the club (just before i started the rebuild) i didnt know much about k engines.....now that i've rebuilt and worked on one many times, i can honestly tell you i don't regret any bit of spending money on a K engine (i'm still doing it lol). Felix is right, you wont really feel much difference between the 4K and 5K....torque and a bit more get up and go. And anyone that says you can't get a 5K to rev cause they are a "van engine" needs to have a look at some of the 5Ks on here....lol Quote
turbo_rolla Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 (edited) The engine I'm looking at is just at a selve serve wrecker here in SA. Your best shot to get a cheap one is to look on here i think, cause i made calls to commercial dismantlers here in adelaide and barely anyone knew of them, or wanted $1400 for one! You might have abit more luck being in sydney though mitch. Thought about a 7k for mine teddy, but i was told by a wrecker or something that there's a bit more work involved in wacking these in a ke70 as its not a "direct" bolt in? Obviously would run a carby version for ease of transplant. Can you shed some light on this? Sorry bout no recognition with the pics boys....they were just sitting on my HD and i had no idea who they belonged to! Thanks though! The way I'm looking at it is that i should be able to freshen up the 5k (if its still there) and have a fairly cheap, fresh engine for not toooooo much. Sure, 4age would be nice, but $850 motor, then conversion parts, efi etc..... ;) I'll be happy if i can get a lil extra go out of it, and get my mate to do some "normal" mods to it - mild head work, cam, extractors and wack my 32/36 weber on it. Again, this is all assuming that i get it :jamie: Is anyone on here running a 5k in a ke70? Would it be best to just wack the whole motor in, or mix and match parts like you did xany? Xany Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 Just whack it in mate....it'll be sweet... ;) the only reason i mixed up the parts a bit is for future plans i had.... Quote
irokin Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 don't waste money on a k motor. Amen to that brother... Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 My 5K is dead standard, and in good condition, and it goes alot better than any standard 4K I have seen. Quote
mitch13 Posted June 29, 2006 Author Report Posted June 29, 2006 Thanks for all your input boys. Starting to get a little excited now aye. Haha. 7K sounds tempting but for now i'll be happy with a 5K. don't know much about cam work, what do u do just take the stock one out and put the aftermarket one in? Quote
love ke70 Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 ...Have you read the FAQ at all? Should have all the information you would ever need in there... seriusly man, u may think we're all bein funny f@$kers when we say that but i read and f@$k i learnt what to do with a k motor...other than paint it blue Quote
mitch13 Posted June 29, 2006 Author Report Posted June 29, 2006 Haha i did read it, (or alt least some of it), it just easier to ask you guys that have done this shit before so i know everything is accurate. How do 32/36 WEBER DGV CARBYS go on 5Ks? Quote
turbo_rolla Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 How do 32/36 WEBER DGV CARBYS go on 5Ks? I'll tell ya in a few weeks (or months) if i get this 5k on the weekend cause i've got a 32/36 weber sitting around that was gonna go on the 4k, but will go on the 5k if i get it. Like love_ke70 said though, the FAQ is very helpful though. I'll be building mine up with a mate, and will be using the FAQ as a pretty good guide of what to do. Maybe think about a solid lifter conversion also? (read about that on the FAQ's also.....). If I'm pulling this engine out on the weekend, would you recommend to just get the long engine, or get stuff like radiator, starter, dizzy etc too, or should the existing stuff off the 4k be alright? If its got a 5 speed mated up to it i'll definately be taking that! :jamie: What are the chances of the engine fitting in my ke70's boot? ;) Quote
Felix Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 a 32/36 is a bit big on a 4k. a 5k breathes a lot harder at lower revs, so the DGV will be better suited. a 28/36 DCD would be even better. just get the long motor, unless they throw in the other gear. all your existing ancillaries will bolt on. my solid lifter conversion cost me a whole $0. ;) nothing wrong with the hydraulics though. you don't need to rev the piss out of a 5k like you do with a 4k to make power. if you use hydraulics and get a reground cam, skim the base of the rocker pedestals to maintain lifter preload. this takes into account the reduction in the base circle diameter of the cam when they regrind it.
