KE20 strut tops

Hi Everyone,

Myself and 14yo grandson in the process of slowly restoring a 1972 KE20.

Just wondering if anyone is able to tell me where I can get strut tops from. 

I called Repco and Burson but they no longer stock

                                 Yeah, I would be doubtful if any the main-line spare parts places stocked them, as they are in pretty small demand, these days.

You best bet is ebay.  There are a couple on there at present; both second hand & new aftermarket ones, out of Thailand.  There are still a lot of olde Rollas in that part of the world, & it has spurned an after market manufacturing need.   All the Rolla bits, I've sourced from Thailand over the years, have been pretty good.

Someone, on here might have some, they can spare.

Love to see some pics of you & your grandson's project.  Which state & region, are you located ?

    i purchased these ones for my rolla, the bolts where a little on the small side so i had a little trouble getting one nut on.

    they did fit well but i will be upgrading to coilovers at some stage (who knows how long a build will take) and then i will use camber plates. 

 

if i had my time again i would probably just order from rockauto, i know ive said it before but they are a good resource for you

Problem with Rockauto is they are in the US, and postage is astronomical.

Welcome to the wonderful world of part searching.  Being doing it a long time, and have learned to buy stuff when I see it at a reasonable price, if I think I'll need it in the years ahead.

Various repro stuff is available from Thailand, but a lot of it is fairly ordinary quality.  Realistically though, there aren't really any other options.  Mechanicals are reasonably available but becoming increasingly scarce.  If you think you will need a windscreen, buy one now.

Trim is only available second hand, if you can find it

hey parrot, 

their shipping seems to have come down. only cost me $30 to have shocks, bolts, lug nuts, and some seals sent over. came via fedex and in about 1.5 weeks so i can't complain. given their prices are generally pretty good, if you have a list of parts then you can buy a few things and it all balances out. i shudder to think how much shipping in individual ebay items has cost me. 

but the hunt for parts is real, like finding replacement shackles for the rear leaf springs, and don't get me started on the rear side window seals for the ke26 4dr wagon. 

 

but i will keep searching, its all we can do

Amayama might be the go ?  You really need to have the original OEM part number, to make it easy, but it's amazing how much brand new stuff they have for olde Japanese cars.

Some parts are expensive, but others, I've been presently surprised.  Very fast delivery to Australia, as they apparently consolidate everything for Australia, into one shipment, & then deliver out of a warehouse somewhere in a southern suburb of Sydney.

I'm an Amayama fan, and also a Yahoo Japan auctions fan.  A part number book is a great thing to have but they are not commonly available. A surprising amount of assorted parts can be picked up new from Toyota new via Amayama.  There are tricks to using those sites to have the best chance of locating things.  Same with ebay.  You need look outside the box and look at US ebay for stuff like brake parts/fuel system parts that you otherwise may struggle to find.  There are part wholesalers in the US with lots of stuff who specialise in reselling stock bought in from closed businesses.  Quoted Ebay postage can be extreme, so talk to the sellers about actual postage.  They will generally work with you on this.  BUT, you need to know what you are looking at, and whether it is correct for your application.  i.e. if looking at brake cylinders for example, knowing which bore size you need.

Try and stick with components that were made in japan if you can determine this.  Often you will find they also made the OEM parts in the first place.  555 for balljoints/tierods.   Miyaco for brake components.  Often the stuff from US resellers is Japanese made, but rebranded in a Girling box as an example.

Thanks Pete !   I've learnt something today.  A few years ago, I refurbished all my KE30's, ball joints, tie rod ends, & pivot point, with "555" branded parts, which I purchased on-line.  I remember at the time of installing, thinking, these are really good quality, & look exactly like the originals, I'd just removed.

Now I know why !

Hey Parrot,

    if you do have the part number of the side rear window seal, and the rear quarter window seal that would be great. this part just seems to be as rare as rocking horse poo... 

I have highlighted the two seals that i need on both sides of the car. 

I'm just about to put the new shocks in the rear, but i was going to replace the ubolts and shackles. So i am looking for replacement shackles, if anyone knows some that fit it would be appreciated.

Hi Pete,

              Has your part book got the P/N for the KE20 strut tops ?  Without part number, I could not check availability with Amayama.  I placed an enquiry with Amayama yesterday,  describing part, but now they need chassis number.

I thought I had found it on the web yesterday, but it turned out to be a front indicator orange lense.

    so if in reading this right, the parts I'm after are the 

68188-13010, 68189-13010 (for the door quarter windows)

62743-13030, 62744-13030 (for the rear sides windows)

 

is this correct? sorry ive never used the parts catalogue so just making sure that I'm seeing this right,

Part Number for KE2x strut tops is 48609-12030
 

To my surprise it is showing on Amayama as available, which really only means it MIGHT be available. Anyway, I’ve ordered a set and will find out one way or the other. $190 a pair.

Wenisman that’s spot on. I would be stunned if they were available. I would be looking for something ‘common’ and more recent with that type of window, and buying a seal to cut down

    according to amayama they are available. So ive put the order in and I will see whats available. thanks again for your help. 

Toyota heritage are looking at making reproduction seals, so i will wait and see what they come up with.
