Dyzza Posted May 14, 2006 Report Posted May 14, 2006 hey guys well my diff plug on my borg-warner (from ke55) must be cross-threaded coz it freespins when you try and undo it to top up the diff oil ... i guess my only option is the change the backing plate over to one where the diff plug isn't cross threaded ... is there any nacks with a corolla diff in changing this plate over? I just don't wanna start it and drain what oil is left in the diff, and find something out afterwards and not have the car on the road ... its dropped a bit of oil out of the diff, and i wanna top it up ASAP but can't ... grr Thanks for you help, dyzza Quote
love ke70 Posted May 15, 2006 Report Posted May 15, 2006 just get the gasket and the backing plate before you start. should be easy peasy! :D Quote
Raven Posted May 15, 2006 Report Posted May 15, 2006 Don't forget to catch the diff oil in something too and it will smell pretty bad! Quote
love ke70 Posted May 15, 2006 Report Posted May 15, 2006 lol, old diff oil is the devil. i have a tendency of throwing away the clothes I'm wearing when i do a diff oil change yicky stuff! Quote
Dyzza Posted May 15, 2006 Author Report Posted May 15, 2006 alrighty thanks ... i'll let yas know how i go ... :D dyzza Quote
Taz_Rx Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 don't bother buying a gasket for it. make one out of a cornflakes box, or any other cereal etc box you may have laying around at home!!! they work really well, and mine hasn't dropped a drip of oil. only thing you need to remember is just give the shiny printed side a bit of sand to roughen it up a bit and you're all good to go. plus I reckon you could buy about 3 boxes of cornflakes for what toyota would charge you for the genuine gasket. have you got a nerw backing plate yet?? I have 1. Quote
Dyzza Posted May 19, 2006 Author Report Posted May 19, 2006 lol nice method ... yeah ancullen is sending me one :D thanks for the tip ... might go with a gasket but :) Quote
Raven Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 Better still. Buy some Gasket Paper and make one. Use the ball end of a hammer to get the shape! Should have plenty of Gasket Paper left over to make other gaskets for various other parts later on. :D Quote
ancullen Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 It's fun making your own gaskets. I did one to go between my gearbox and it's bellhousing. It takes a bit of patience, but it's really easy to do and you get a nice sense of achievement and a pretty homemade gasket (which is equally good to a bought one). Quote
Raven Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 Did you use gasket paper ancullen or go the cornflakes way? Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 Just use silicon for the backing plate...I've never had one leak with silicone Quote
ancullen Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 I used gasket paper for the gearbox to bellhousing job. Have never used a cornflake box - I might if I get desperate, but I doubt it. Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted May 20, 2006 Report Posted May 20, 2006 My friend used a cornflakes box as a head gasket on his 308 Commodore during the summernats...because that's all he could get. It lasted the whole of the summernats Quote
thomo Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 mate used the side out of his boot as a main bearing, lasted 600kms, things you do in the bush now how of topic was that, i'll shut up and go back under my rock now Quote
love ke70 Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 lol, that deserves respect...who would be going along and think, oh f@$k i need a new main, i know, lets use my boots! bwahahahaha respect to him :monkey: Quote
