SLOTH Snr Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 The last couple of weeks I've been watching initial D. On Friday night at a party Craig and I had a very Bunta/Takumi moment. It was like a scene out of the show. It went something like this. Craig: (very apprehensive)Dad the 7K is pretty slow off the mark since it was rebuilt Me: (choking on scotch, with heart dropping out arsehole)WADAYOUMEAN? Craig: Well when I take off it sort of crawls off, then when its about 2300rpm it realy takes off Me:(with heart making its way back home)Ah! Young Takumi son,you must keep the revs at or above this magical 2300rpm In a nutshell Craig has never driven a car with a cam and I hadn't thought to explain the need for change to his driving style. One thing about this motor is that it has a powerband reminiscent of a 2 stroke motor bike. (At the bottom end anyway) I was wondering how many of you guys experienced this when you first drove a hot motor. I know I did. Quote
thomo Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 I'm a mechanical savage, build fast motor, mash throttle open, did that to the first motor and everyone since, so no i havent experianced the phenomenon, but yes friends have, mostly when they step over from v8s into the hot 4 formerly daily driver/girlfriends car Quote
Medicine_Man Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 Drive it like you stole it, Thats my motto.. Quote
Dan Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 Drive it like you stole it, Thats my motto.. Amen to that, brother! Quote
demuire Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 Sounds like my Camry, absolutely no power below about 2500-3000RPM (struggles to even take off in 1st gear). Except, my engine is stock. It's just a kinda stuffed :) Quote
TOMsGPTurbo Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 I'm very confused, you mean engines didn't have cams? what the? I went from Eunos 30x to Eunos 500 to Mazda 626 1984(wtf?) and then to Telsta(1985) and then to Toyota Corolla II GP Turbo (YAY!) I'm pretty sure every one of them had a cam... of some sort.. Quote
st.nick Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 My old BF1062 Familia (4WD Turbo 323) had the insane ex-works motor in it. However, the stock gearbox was all wrong for the massive turbo... Lag, lag, lag upto 4500RPM, then !!!BANG!!! Oxygen masks please!!! Next gear.... lag lag lag upto 4500rpm then !!!BANG!!! oxygen masks please!! This was a nightmare on gravel, as she'd spool up in 3rd, about 100-120km/h, and spin all 4 wheels!! Not good for racing, as thru corners, she'd drop off powerband, and had no power to pull you thru the corner!! Not cool!! Young and stupid... (In hindsight) I should have swapped to a smaller turbo!! But alas... Turbo envy!! Bigger is better. Not when you can't drive it properly, its not!! Quote
Raven Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 And, he can make people throw up in it :) My cortina i had was a bit slow off the mark, but hell it flew once the cam came on song. It was a 250 x-flow, redline manifold, 350 holley carb, pacemaker extractors, 2.5" sports exhaust and it was a 4 speed manual. Quickest car i've owned so far. :) Quote
lammi Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 yessss. apparently my car has bigger cams aaccording to the previous owner...he didnt tell me much more than that about it. buttt....has anyone seen the initial D movie. pretty funny movie Quote

TOMsGPTurbo Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 Yep every episode, I own the movie, I own the 1:24 model set, I have 3 of the 5 smaller model set(one extra to play with) :) Mashed episodes and different translations of stage one where bunta apparently fits a Honda engine to the 86 :) (misstranslation! lol) And I remember when the club members where talking about it and my reaction was "WTF, A cartoon? damn that must suck!" and then I saw my 1st episode and never went back lol Quote
faulksy Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 (edited) Thomo: Yeah i had fuelling problems with it. Got rid of it now though so i guess it wasnt my problem after that haha. Just realised I'm on Scotto's profile. Oops! - AE35 Edited May 10, 2006 by faulksy Quote
