Taz_Rx Posted May 7, 2006 Report Posted May 7, 2006 in over 2 years of having a weldy with a couple of trips to the drags, countless burnouts, drift, turboed engine, and my driving :lolcry: I've only even broken 1 axle!! and I've busted the welds about 3 times!! the only time I have broken an axle (10:45pm the friday night befor tassie nats :) ) I wasn't doing anything stupid, just a couple of blocks, didn't even here it go, first thing i knew floored it and it broke traction in the dry and i knew straight away what had happened. never heard of the sikaflex idea. ;) can understand the idea behind it, as it would have a bit of flex in it for corners, but would still skip say when doing a U turn. honnestly though I can't really see it lasting much more than a day befor the sun gears chew away enough sikflex for it to open wheel again. best option i think for a weldy is the cut out a thick steel plate (very least 5mm), cut some teeth holes in it so it will sorta drop into the sun gears and then weld it in. this way if the welds break the plate will re-jam in the sun gears. mind you I did once have this plate jam in the friggen CW and P. :) Quote
SLO-055 Posted May 11, 2006 Report Posted May 11, 2006 that plate jammed between crownwheel an pinion??? haha the mental image of what ensued after this happened is quite funny!!! my diff is locked as well and i haven't broken an axle yet, an it's a daily driver, i still think you have the same issues with open centre diffs, think of how quick your sun gears are hookin about when one wheel is spinning and one has traction, thats why when the gears mesh they go everywhere, least with a weldy you can drive it still... I have no hesitation in saying I would have written it off, and possible some other cars too! :) Quote
