I just put some second hand ae86 coilovers in my ke70 and I was wondering if the strut tops are meant look like this. Cheers

Depends, do you want negative camber? As it’s maxed out right now. If you want less/ no camber you can adjust them to the centre.

Some of those studs look a bit crooked from that photo? Should be fine but maybe keep an eye on them that the nuts are tight. 

Be a good idea to get a wheel alignment regardless so they’ll be able to adjust those camber tops to whatever alignment settings you like.

So the those top nuts that are holding the strut insert in the coilovers or whatever are ok?  I was just a bit worried cos one looks like it’s been fully cranked tight and the other like it’s backed right off. Also there’s a knocking sound coming from both coilovers and I was wondering if they were the cause.  Cheers

The centre nut secures the top of the strut rod in the camber top. The 4 bolts are loosened to allow the plate to slide in and out to adjust camber. 

They are secondhand so anything could be going on. Are the top nuts the same design?  Have you checked the strut inserts to make sure they are the same/not shagged. Is the nut at the top of the strut body retaining the insert tight?  Are the inserts the right length for the adapted strut housings?  Is the bearing in the cambertop buggered?

I would be pulling them apart to check everything. Clearly one nut is way further recessed than the other.

got any photos of them before you put them in?

I reckon thy have adapted camber plates to shocks and they don't quite fit properly., explains the knocking and oddball fasteners used. I had to machine some spacers to make some camber tops fit some shocks i had in my DIY coilovers.

Also there is often a sleeve where the strut piston passes through the bearing. This then has a machined face that the top nut sits on. If that’s missing there will be movement laterally in the piston, and slop at the top partially taken up by screwing the nut down further.

Ah I did not notice that part on mobile when I looked at it. They look like the same nut to me? But for whatever reason the top one is not seated correctly. Could be misalignment or not assembled correctly. I’d be blowing it apart and seeing what the difference is between them and where the noise is coming from

I'll give you $100 for them so I can use them for parts..!

Actually, just what everyone said, they're not right, probably worn out/broken and you will have to strip them right down then find out how they work. Take the shocks out of the struts and start from there. Find out what doesn't fit properly and what doesn't tighten down correctly. Definately get the wheel alignment and don't run max negative camber!  You will need more toe-in for every degree neg camber to even out the tyre wear across the tread, and those tyres will vanish quickly!

well I’ll be a bit pissed of if there rooted. I payed an arm and a leg for them in good faith. Turns out I’ve probably been jibbed. I’ll most likely just put my old stuff back in and hunt for some new coilovers if these ones are fucked I think. Do you know where I would be able to source parts for hsd coilovers from?

Nah the only photos I have are the ones he sent me before I bought them. They are hsd coilovers so i would think the camber tops should be properly fitted. Hopefully there not rooted

I might just take them somewhere that specialises in suspension I think. I don’t really know what lm looking at when it comes to shit like that.
