okitavio Posted June 15, 2018 Report Posted June 15, 2018 Hi all, I have a 1981 KE70 and need to know what gearbox oil to use (it has a 4k engine with a 5 speed manual trans). I have done quite a bit of research in the forum, but I need to be sure Is it 80W90 or 75W80 or something else? Any other variable to worry about when choosing the oil? Thanks! Looking forward to your answers Quote
ke70dave Posted June 15, 2018 Report Posted June 15, 2018 (edited) Don't over think it. I usually just consult the penrite oil product guide when looking at oils. 80w90 seems to be the go. Any brand you like. These days I generally just buy a brand name that is on special. Reality is any "Mineral manual gear oil" will do the trick. They all smell just as bad in gear oil Edited June 15, 2018 by ke70dave 1 Quote
okitavio Posted June 15, 2018 Author Report Posted June 15, 2018 That was fast, thanks! I'll go with that then. What made me doubt was seeing a couple posts here on the forum saying that you should't use 80W90 unless it was going in the diff. I guess you can use it for both. Anyway, thanks again! Greetings from Argentina Quote
ke70dave Posted June 15, 2018 Report Posted June 15, 2018 Back in my ke70 days i used the same stuff in gbox and diff, stinky bloody gear oil. Don't think it makes much difference. Argentina hey, where abouts? Quote
davew7 Posted June 15, 2018 Report Posted June 15, 2018 Do not use gear lube with a GL-5 or GL4/5 rating. Only use GL-4 or GL-3 in the trans. Using a lube with the GL-5 rating long term will destroy your syncho's in the these older trans designs that have brass alloy syncho's. DaveW Quote
