nasty crash today, white mini lost control and ran into spectators, 3 injured, 2 of them seriously, a guy I know was there, it was lucky he didnt get hit as well

Posted

yeah they werent in a safe spot but then again the mini went around way too fast, everyone else managed to get around the corner with no problems

the nasty corner the crash was on wasnt marked as a "hazard area" when it really should of done, that corner is one of the most trickiest corners in the targa, but since the targa HQ deemed that it didnt need the signs, the targa officials werent allowed to put up the signs, even though they knew they should, and an hour later, these poor japs entering into the corner at warp speed lost control and ploughed into a group, and they actually hit 5 people not 3.

but the really mean thing out of it now is, that since Japan is such a proud country and stuff they have now named the two japs that lost control of the mini as the "disgrace of the nation"

now that's pretty mean

Any Hobartians who know the corner in particular (rh sweeps into a hairpin left, with a big oak tree on the outside of the off camber sweeper, where it becomes the hairpin), and saw the footage of the mini can see PLAIN AS DAY that the car was way, way , way too fast into the hairpin... Clipping a wooden barrier on the outside of the corner, just near the oak tree wouldn't have helped the braking distance either!!

The corner would (or should) be marked as a 'triple caution' (for any rally-heads amongst us)... That'll give you an idea of the approach.

For non-rally-heads, 'triple caution' is a navigation term meaning 'slow the f@$k down!!'

Demuire should be able to enlighten us to the corner in question, describe the approach, what the notes or route chart say, and what sort of speed a mini cooper S would come in there at. (or not Demuire, your choice) :P

Heresay says people were on private property, and were possibly moved by saety crew, then wen't back there once the safety crews had gone.

Its called bad luck... Motorsport IS dangerous kiddies, and that danger increases if you are stand in a f@$kin' stupid spot...like a run-off area!!

Motorsport is dangerous, I agree, but my contacts are saying that there are a couple of court cases coming up due to this incident. Can't say anymore at this stage :P

Hey I agree with you. There is a press release on the Targa site detailing the investigation CAMS is going to do. I think someone not at fault is going to be a scapegoat knowing CAMS.

Not entirely sure which corner it was (since we just toured through I wasn't keeping tabs on the notes) but I believe the notes read a little something like this:

8L 100 8R 50 ! KINK & RE T2L & SHRT 9R

The car came off on the RE (right entry ie road kinks to the right slightly) T2L (turn 2 left). So yes, there is a ! (CARE) on that call.

No worries Man,

Bit of a shame my stage got canned!! We lost too much time after we had some inbred wanker drive down to the start control AGAINST THE DIRECTION of the stage!!

We were mere minutes from sending in "zero Tango" too.

He pulled the tape down from his gate (without reading the attached A4 sized flyer with info as to what was happening), and proceded to 'go to the shops'... With his 5 or 6 yo daughter in the front seat WITHOUT a seatbelt on!!

Could have been very nasty!!

How did you guys place??

Happy with overall results??
