Fishtank Posted April 18, 2016 Report Posted April 18, 2016 Starting to get a groaning scraping noise coming from the front end when turning full, or close to full lock. I believe this is the CV joints. Have not had a chance to take a look at the boots yet but my main question is, should I get this fixed asap or can it be left a little while. What will eventually happen if I leave it too long? Anything catestrophic or dangerous? Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted April 19, 2016 Report Posted April 19, 2016 CVs tend to make clicking/knocking noises rather than grinding, does it make the noise when you are stationary too? (if so it could be the power steering pump) Quote
Fishtank Posted April 19, 2016 Author Report Posted April 19, 2016 No only when turning and only when at full lock left or right Quote
Fishtank Posted April 19, 2016 Author Report Posted April 19, 2016 Hmm its definitely a grinding scraping metal on metal sound. Maybe its wheel bearings or ball joints? Quote
ke70dave Posted April 19, 2016 Report Posted April 19, 2016 Could any of those things. I'd be lookin at CVS and wheel bearings. CVS only make noise when under acceleration in my experience Can check wheel bearings by lifitng wheels and pulling on the top and bottom of wheel tryin to feel the play in bearing. Not just the wheel scraping on something plastic? Quote
Fishtank Posted April 19, 2016 Author Report Posted April 19, 2016 Thanks mate I forgot about that bearing check. Ill try that next. Pretty sure its not scraping plastic, it sounds like like when the boots split on my old 4runner and shit started getting into the CV joints. Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted April 20, 2016 Report Posted April 20, 2016 Stock or aftermarket wheels? Quote
Fishtank Posted April 20, 2016 Author Report Posted April 20, 2016 Nar stock its all stock. Haha Quote
Fishtank Posted July 3, 2016 Author Report Posted July 3, 2016 So yeah its def the CVS like I was saying. Left one has split and grease everywhere. How long do I have before more damage is done? I'm assuming at this stage the whole CV will need replacing not just the boot. How many hours labour can I expect from that? Just got back from overseas holidays and a bit strapped for cash that's all. Quote
