kenny727 Posted June 24, 2015 Report Posted June 24, 2015 (edited) I just bought a 82 corolla with a 3tc in it. Of course I want to be able to get it sideways, so what are some performance upgrades I can put on without getting down to removing the engine..Pretty much a head up build. Also I do not want to go turbo.. maybe Alcohol injection for the track.. this is a daily driver so reliability is a must, so I don't want to go to drastic Does the 3t turbo EFI system bolt right on? How do I go about tuning it? Any other T series parts I can put on for horsepower? I seen theres a 3te(I think thats it) that runs on efi, since I'm not going turbo would that be better? Also heared the head on that engine has a smaller combustion chamber = more compression.. good move? or the DOHC head from gte? Heres a list of parts recommended so far. Headers + Exhaust Webber 32/36 carb MSD 6AL NOS ( I heard this engine is indestructible anyone know a shot range?) Rebuild Head ( +shave for compression, for max performance) Camshaft Will update this list with part locations, and other good te72 sites Edited November 8, 2015 by kenny727 Quote
springersrolla Posted June 24, 2015 Report Posted June 24, 2015 http://www.brdracing.com/ I used to run a 32/36dgv weber and extractors. Went alright. Just turbo it, will still be streetable. Lots of mods, compression, carb, spark, exhaust, cam etc Quote
kenny727 Posted July 4, 2015 Author Report Posted July 4, 2015 I would like too, but That would be somthing I need to pull the engine and have the car off the road to get it right. I get each weekend, so until I get another 3t to keep one in constantly, but then at that rate Id want a better engine.. So I just want to keep it simple with bolt ons, Any advice on swapped heads? What about carbs? I don't want side draft. Quote
styler Posted July 4, 2015 Report Posted July 4, 2015 (edited) Leave the going sideways for crabs, they have the parts to do it well. You most likely want to go forwards at speed and reverse slowly once in a while. Seems you want bolt on horsepower, relax you need nos, you need one of these, actually make it two, and you need them by tonight [] NOS []NOS. Small turbo systems are a great way to add some power cheaply without working the internals of the motor like in a NA build, intercoolers and boost controllers are good too. More power eventually leads to less reliability unless you rebuild the motor to handle more killer wasps buzzing around in there trying to get out. The 3tgteu is the turbo motor you may be thinking of, the intakes do not match up but you can make an adapter plate to allow them to eventually match up. Keeping it simple with bolt ons sounds like a recommendation after a facelift, doesn't really work with cars, unless you already have the facelift model. For you, BRD Racing can build you a mild 3tc and you can swap it in and live a happy life. Edited July 6, 2015 by styler Quote
kenny727 Posted September 2, 2015 Author Report Posted September 2, 2015 What can I do to a pushrod head that will help performance an how much would I expect to gain? How about adding FI? VS DOHC + FI? Id like a Definite All motor+NOS Maybe high revving? When I bought the car my friend/ex owner put weisco 8.5-1 pistons.. How can I get that up without going into the block.. Would like a head up performance build. Quote
Mechanical Sympathy Posted September 2, 2015 Report Posted September 2, 2015 (edited) Any naturally aspirated engine will benefit from; an increase in compression (whether by changing pistons or shaving the head, or both) , increased camshaft duration and lift, improved carburettion (or injection) and a freer flowing exhaust. How much you gain is directly proportional to how much you spend. All of those things need to be considered in conjunction with each other. Edited September 2, 2015 by Mechanical Sympathy Quote
kenny727 Posted September 3, 2015 Author Report Posted September 3, 2015 Who makes a good 3tc cam? How much can you shave the Pushrod Head? Whats the compression increase? Since FI might be temporarily out of my budget, I think I have the 32/36 weber carb. For some reason can't ulpload pics, But it does say Weber and its different then my friends stock unit. Whats the next step after that carb? BTW straight pipes with 4-1 header. Will upload the main post with all ideas. I don't know why I just can't find parts for this engine! Quote
Mechanical Sympathy Posted September 3, 2015 Report Posted September 3, 2015 (edited) Have you checked out http://www.brdracing.com ? I get most of my parts from these places! http://www.amayama.com http://www.ebay.com Edited September 3, 2015 by Mechanical Sympathy Quote
altezzaclub Posted September 3, 2015 Report Posted September 3, 2015 (edited) Whats the next step after that carb? Single DCOE Weber if there is a manifold for it. Otherwise you might make a manifold out of exhaust pipe and a plate.. if you don't want side-draught then maybe twin down-draughts like a 3K-B. Best would be twin DCOEs, for which there are manifolds, or quad Mikunis off a bike if you're keen. It depends on what you can find and how much room there is down that side of the engine. The T motors went to the USA and South Africa rather than here in Aussie, so any parts will be over there. At least with the pushrods you can have your cam re-cut for power, you can't do that with DOHC. You have to calculate the compression ratio for skimming the head, so learn up about using burettes and graph paper. You will end up with a figure of "x-thou skimmed off raises the compression by y-times". Just get it running sweetly and use it while you make a list of what you want to do, then start finding parts. Number one is to do a compression test, write it down then put a bit of oil in each cylinder and repeat it. That will give you an idea of how worn the rings are. Then work on the list... A spare head would be great, it means you can prepare everything and just swap it one weekend. I assume the easiest way to do a cam swap is by pulling the motor out, you might want to check up on that. Get the carbs and manifolds you want, match all the ports, then grind the head ports to suit Grind the valves in then de-shroud around them and finally get it skimmed as much as you want. You'll be stuck if you want your cam cut, but if you find a grinder that will supply one on deposit and you send your one back to him later, then do it. Buy a gasket set and away you go... Don't forget things like timing chain wear and tensioner wear... There is a lot to say for having the motor out for a week and getting the block cleaned and de-scaled. That would also be the time you checked the bearings for wear, its no good putting a hot head on a worn crank. With the block stripped you can measure the bore and see how worn the rings are, and if its pretty good a hone and new rings would give it extra power.. On that list is also to check the oil pump for wear. If you're pushed for time just do the head. Have the block water blasted out in the galleries and the radiator flushed and tested, as there is nothing worse than overheating a new hot motor and blowing the head gasket because there was 30years of rust scale stuck inside. Put a thermometer in the radiator cap hole and check what temperature the electric fan turns on at, it would be a shame if the sensor didn't work or the fan relay was blown. There's lots more, but that's enough to keep you busy! Edited September 3, 2015 by altezzaclub Quote
tojo2 Posted September 3, 2015 Report Posted September 3, 2015 Who makes a good 3tc cam? . I don't know why I just can't find parts for this engine! Bumpers in your pic look like youre in US so try schneider cams . They do a few grinds rockauto have some parts for your car as well. May find some second hand stuff on garage3tc Quote
kenny727 Posted September 6, 2015 Author Report Posted September 6, 2015 (edited) That's a lot of info altezzaclub and I appreciate it. Does anyone know the max head shave you can do for clearece? and the amount you gain per say .05? I have the weber carb, what HP range is that good for? And for spartk control I want MSD 6AL I'm thinking about a 60 shot of nos that's not unreasonable is it? Updated parts list for my personal build Edited November 8, 2015 by kenny727 Quote
