Samwich Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 Hey guys, I'm new to Rolla's, Pick up a KE30 the other day to turn in to a run around. Starting to fix the little issues to get it ready for rego. The speedo doesn't seem to be working correctly. Its reading 60-80kmph when only going about 10-20km in the drive way... Does this mean something on the gearbox is broken? Looked at the cable and it doesn't look to be spinning that fast.. Thanks Sam Quote
Taz_Rx Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 There's not much that can go wrong at the gearbox end, the Speedo drive is fixed to the output shaft. Maybe see if you can source another cluster locally and cheap. Quote
coln72 Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 try a small dob of grease on the end of the cable where it plugs into the cluster. Quote
lexsmaz Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 (edited) Sounds like you are going to have the quickest KE30 on the planet according to your speedo :) In all seriousness, as has been mentioned sounds like your speedo head is no good & no grease etc is going to fix it as that's not where the problem is, just change over the cluster or speedo head .. Samwich Posted December 15, 2014 Author Report Posted December 15, 2014 haha it will be quick when the SR out of the Gemini goes in one day... but that wont happen for awhile.. Like this thing to much stock :P Thanks for all the replys guys.. Time to find a new cluster Quote
coln72 Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 My KE35 was doing the same. The speedo would jump from 60 km/h up to 130 km/h down to 30 km/h. Thought I was pissed. Pulled the cable out and did the grease thing and it was all good. And I did say try. I didn't say it would fix it......................... Quote
Samwich Posted December 15, 2014 Author Report Posted December 15, 2014 May aswell try the grease thingo to :) So just slap some on the needle that spins? Quote
Samwich Posted December 15, 2014 Author Report Posted December 15, 2014 Chucked my gemini speedo on and it works. Looks like it must be the speedo.. Quote
lexsmaz Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 (edited) For future information If the speedo is jumping wildly from low reading to a high reading it will be the cable, but if its fairly steady but reads high it has to be in the speedo head itself & from what Samwich first described it wasn't reading all over the place, it was just high hence why I said the grease wont help .. If you do grease the cable due to wild erratic readings you need to make sure there are no kinks in the outer cable & pull the complete inner out & grease & refit ...
