mexr69 Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 (edited) Hi guys i want to start a project I want to put a v6 3.8L Buick engine into a corona! Has anyone here done this conversion before? if so how much did it cost you? and how hard was it?? + what tail shaft did you use? thanks. -Corey Edited January 15, 2014 by mexr69 Quote
Mechanical Sympathy Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 (edited) If you're not sure what it would involve, suffice to say it'd be hard, expensive and a custom (or at least cut and shut) tailshaft would be required, along with many many other custom things. Is your car 2S powered? I reckon you'd be better off with a 3SGTE... You've already got most of the bits required (i.e. sump, bellhousing, gearbox, starter, engine and gearbox mounts) It would handle better, have a better chance of getting registered, your speedo will work and it will crank out just as much power. KE70+AE92 Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 (edited) Can be cheap or expensive. Depends how much you do yourself! Mine has been fairly cheap as ive done nearly all of it myself. There a very basic engine and wiring them up isnt that hard. Give it a go but i highly doubt it can be registered! Heres a photo if my rolla atm. Edited January 15, 2014 by KE70+AE92 Quote

Mechanical Sympathy Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 Like GT4 Celicas, MR2s and Japanese Caldinas and stuff. An import motor basically. I don't think Club Rego is going to get you any special dispensation to build an unroadworthy car. In fact quite the opposite. Quote

Seriously though why would you want to go to all the trouble/illegalities for a 3.8 VN motor? Put a 1G-GTE into it. Its legal. It makes more power stock and it has potential to make a lot more. Plus its been done HEAPS. Quote
oh what a nissan feeling! Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 The 3.8 moo would very likely be legal, the car is heavy enough. 1g is a waste of time as well and would barely make more powers than a later moo motor. 1j, 2j would be more worthwhile. Quote

Mechanical Sympathy Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 That does actually worry me, because in the long run it ruins the scheme for people who try to do the right thing. Anyway in Queensland you can go to gaol for being in those kinds of clubs. Quote
ke70dave Posted January 16, 2014 Report Posted January 16, 2014 Why isnt the 3.8 v6 N/A legal? NCOP for vehilcs between 800-1100kg is Maximum ccs' = original mass x 4 Thats like 4L or so if a corona is around 1000kg (which i think it would be possible over 1100kg, which is original mass x 5) Not sure if vic has adopted NCOP. Best bet to ring an engineer to get the real story. Quote
KE70+AE92 Posted January 16, 2014 Report Posted January 16, 2014 Ive probably spent about 4g but i think thats a over estimate and it includes the car itself and the suspension and brakes too. I wish we had those laws here in nsw . I think legal here is 2.4l n/a and like 1.8 turbo. Quote
KE70+AE92 Posted January 16, 2014 Report Posted January 16, 2014 I was just checking the standard. Nsw is using the vsb14 now. Legally now the formula for max engine size for cars between 800 and 1100 is vehicle weight x 4 for n/a and vehicle weight x 2.75 So for a ke70 i think they weight 950kgs Its allowed 3800cc for n/a And 2600cc for turbo All this has to be engineered!
