ancullen Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 I very much doubt the validity of certain aspects of this article. I have also heard that Toyota are planning a Corolla GT4 to continue the GT4 line, which to date has gone Celica GT4 (ST165, ST185, ST205), then Caldina GT4 (Japan market only). So while for the most part this article is correct, I doubt the following: 1. The AZ-series motor is the obvious choice for the engine, however I don't think that Toyota will bother developing a 2.5L version when they've already got a 2.4L version on hand (2AZ-FE). I suppose that Toyota may decide that this version has too little a bore to stroke ratio (88.5mm bore, 96mm stroke) and create a larger bore variant with about 91mm bore, or a version with completely different measurements and a G-series head ala the 2ZZ-GE versus the 1ZZ-FE. 2. The Corolla pictured looks WAY too much like the current model. Even more to the point, it looks WAY WAY too much like the illustration done by Car & Driver for the upcoming Corolla. The problem with this is that the planned version was sent back to the drawing board as soon as Toyota saw the new Honda Civic. The planned version was WAY too conservative, so Toyota are going with something sportier looking, which should be a bonus (hopefully they'll look to the designers of the latest Lexuses for advice). 3. I don't know what drivetrain the current Caldina has, but I would think that if Toyota wanted to use an AWD drivetrain in the Corolla in conjunction with the AZ-series motor, they'd probably just use that from the RAV4. I'd love to see this car get released, and I'd definitely love to see Toyota back in WRC. More manufacturers are desperately needed. Plus it'd be cool to have a Corolla that everyone can respect again. Sure the Sportivo's pretty cool, but it's just a Corolla with Celica running gear.
