I've always loved the Ke70 and when one was presented to me i snapped it up in a heartbeat!

It is a 1982 Toyota corolla Ke70 Flat front, when i got the car it was a bit of a mess. It had obviously been trashed because driving this thing you thought the car was gonna fall apart! After buying a second donor KE i began swapping the crap out! The diff was noisy and leaking, the subframe was bent! The springs in the rear had been chopped severely, and the list goes on. After months of messing around i have finally got it driving well. The motor is a 5k, with a 40mm weber carb, electronic ignition, electri. Fuel pump, extractors and a 2inch exhaust. The car is alot of fun but I'm wanting more from the motor! I recently aquired a 3k( unsure if its a small or big port) with a mild cam and a single weber carb. I've read all the 5k builds and can't seem to find as much info as i would like. I don't want to put a 4age or ca18 or sr20 in the car, i love the simplicity to the K series motors! Ideally id like to turbo charge the 5k(ive seen to many with a SC14) i have a small turbo from a corolla 7afe and a 5k manifold that i could modify, Can anyone give me some advice on draw through and blow through turbo set up's, is it possible to still use the carb i have? Or would i be better to use the 3k? Can the 3k head bolt on a 5k?(unsure if it has dished pistons or not)

And if the heads are not interchangeable, would the mild cam be interchangeable? I am not a mechanic hence why I'm asking for advice, i don't want smart ass replies like "Just put a 4AGZE in and be done with it" This is my daily driver so taking it off the road for too long wont work for me, Thanks!

If you've already got a 5k you'd be stupid to go back to a 3k.

Have a look at my projects thread, theres 3 different turbo setups in there and I know having a read could answer a few of your questions. ;)

Thanks for the advice, alot of content in your threads.

I found out that the carb is a 45 DCOE Weber side draft, has anyone used this carby in a turbo set up on a K motor?

Would it be too difficult to to fit the turbo in the engine bay because it is non cross flow and the carby is there?

Also does the 3k big port have a larger inlet then the 5k and would it be because it has a mild cam would that head be better to use then the stock 5k head

Thanks again!

the 5k is hydraulic tappets, so it has a suitable cam and suitable followers. The 3K cam will be ground to solid lifter specs and shouldn't be used on hydraulics.

Saying that, I don't know how damaging it would be! You'll run into problems getting the two heads matched too, as far as rockers and pushrods go.

If I were you I'd swap the 3K in and build the 5K on the bench so you keep the car running all the time. Get the 5K sorted and turbo'd, then swap it back in over the holidays. Stick to just using 5K parts on it and keeping it hydraulic for simplicity.

You'll have to custom make the manifolds. so you can put the turbo/carb anywhere. Being non-crossflow is ideal if you don't want a n intercooler. So the big question is 'do you want an intercooler'?

Well that depends if he want to go draw through or blow through. With a carbon sealed turbo you could use the 45 in draw through quite easily and just make a pipe up to runthe turbo composite outlet into the stock inlet manifold. Then just knock up an exhaust mani or j pipe to plumb in the hot side of the turbo.

If it was a 3kbp you could use the head on the 5k which would drop the comp a bit then you can use the a12/chev solid lifter conversion bits.

Thanks again for the advice guys, I think I'm going to do a draw through set up but I'm unsure where I can get a carbon sealed turbo from, silly question but can u just put carbon seals in any old turbo or does it need to be a particular turbo thanks

With a blow through set up does the whole carby need to be enclosed or can you just enclose the face where the inlets to the carby are? Just doing my research and people seem to think draw through isnt any where near as good as blow through, any thoughts?

Thanks

If you can make sure the carby is nicely sealed up then you can just use a hat over the inlet. I only used 'ned's helmet' as I was just a bit lazy at the time. It did have its draw backs but worked ok. Made 70rwkw on a 4k with that setup on 8 psi.
