Back Into A Ke70

Right so my Sprinter needs some paint and panel to get it up to where I would like it. I have spent far too much on the running gear for it to be sitting in the shed while I get that sorted. I have been looking for a neat AE71/KE70 to put the running gear into. I have had a couple of close ones where I was just a little too slow with the coin but maybe it is all for the best.

 

Picked this up during the week, local car with only 141,000km. Little bit of surface rust in a couple of places but the normal spots that are bad for rust in these are clear. Will have to track down a cross member and pedal box but other than that I it should be a goer.

 

I gave it a wash and a vacuum today. There are some paint chips that I will fix up before I give it a polish. Really happy with is as I keep looking at stuff it keeps surprising me. Still has the original sale receipt and full service history until the young bloke I bought it off got it. The thing starts and drives really well for what it is though there is very little room between the steering wheel and the seat for leg clearance. Will get around this with a aftermarket wheel but I forgot how much difference just having adjustable tilt makes. Will put the stock rims back on as they have new tyres on them and take it down for rego and see how I go before swapping the running gear over and sorting out engineering.

Tell me about it the best part is I only paid $800 and the guy threw in a T28 in overrated condition to seal the deal. That turbo us sold for $300 so it really cost me $500.

 

Not bad value considering mist people are asking over $2500 for one as neat as this.

Dude there are plenty of absolute POS with price tags well above 2500. Awesome score, hoping I come across one at some stage.

Righto, the suspension out of the Sprinter is in along with the Pug/Hilux brake upgrade. Bulk corner speed with RSR and coilovers, not power though. Will drive it like this for a month or so to make sure that I am happy with it and if all good I will try and take a long weekend from work to put the engine out of the Sprinter into it. Drives much better with just the suspension change, needs to come down about 25mm on the front but would need helper springs due to me not shortening the strut when I did the coilover conversion.

 

May just go for a complete new suspension setup if it all works out and sell these with the Sprinter, if it goes.

Not much happening with this thing. I steam cleaned the carpets and seats which came up well. Also spent the weekend getting the paint up to a decent standard. I gt a little lazy and didn't flatten the paint as well as I probably should have before I started so there is still some orange peel on the doors and such but not biggy. Have been driving it every day to work and it is running well. Hoping to start the engine swap on the long weekend.

Righto, managed to carve out a little bit of time to work on this today. The PWR intercooler from the 86 was not going to fit the 70 very well so I started looking around for a reasonably priced replacement. Picked up a bar and plate cooler on the cheap because they had the end tanks welded on incorrectly so they are offset rather than on the same side. This setup works better for me anyway. They were 3" ends though so bigger than I would have liked but I got there in the end.

 

I have used the intercooler itself as a structural component to tie in the bonnet latch to keep it secure. I also did a quick cut and shut on the bracket for the grill. Everything goes back in nicely and is secure as ever. The plan will be to do the fuel system next and pull the running gear out of the 86 so that it is ready to go when I get the time.

The old rims are on the ae86 the tyres are buggered though so no point running them at this stage. The 15's are a little bling though I guess

Righto got a little bit more done to this over the last couple of weeks. I managed to get hold of a little lip spoiler for the boot which I think helps break up the boxy bum on the thing a little and I ended up tracking down a seat for $80. I know that they old Autobarn Drift seats aren't great but they are ADR compliant and a much better option than the old one. They also have a pretty standard bolt spacing on the bottom so if I want to upgrade the seat down the track then I can just bolt it onto the modified rails.

 

 

I also got the surge tank back today. Just because I have to be a little different I didn't want it in the boot and the under car ones that go next to the fuel tank never look quite right. So I had this made up to sit in the hollow in the floor under the rear passenger seat. The fittings line up with the existing fuel lines so I can use them for the return line to the tank. I just need to run the new 3/8" line from the 044 to the fuel rail.
