dpb Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 (edited) For those of you that don't know me personally I not so long ago picked up a cheap ae92 (or Holden nova) as a daily for my partner but after some discussion we decided that we would wait to get something abit newer so after trying to sell it with no luck and my ke70 track car being nowhere near completed I decided to turn it into a budget circuit racer to keep me amused till my ke70 was done and then pass it on to my partner to get her out on the track.. It was quite sad and run down with 300,000+ kms on the clock filthy interior stocko 13" steelies and more water leaks than a sivve.. So after replacing the water pump, welch plugs, hoses and a badly corroded thermostat housing (and butchered thermostat) and getting some genuine coolant from work it didn't leak a drop.. I then moved on to the service side of things and replaced the timing belt wich was about ready to snap aswell as the power steering and alternater belts.. Then oil, filter and spark plugs. By now it was running quite well and the inside of the engine wasn't as bad as I anticipated when I removed the rocker cover to replace the gasket.. The exhaust manifold was cracked so gave me an excuse to buy some extractors for it and a fully hektik pod filter also got the nod to try help it breath better. With all that out of the way I turned to making it lighter with all unnessary items being turfed such as the entire aircon system back seats console roof lining and associated plastic trims then because I wouldn't have a clue were to get dry ice from I chiseled the sound deadener out aswell. Then decided that the drone from the exhaust would get rather irritating over long period of time so a road sign was measured and cut up to fill the void were the back seat used to seal off the boot. Moving on from the weight reduction it was time for suspension. The rh driveshaft was stuffed so a trip to the wreckers scored me a recod shaft so that went in and then out came the struts for some predders lowered springs and then some camber bolts. Luckily enough I had some multi fit wheels on my ke70 with new tyres so they got thrown on aswell.. And viola el cheapo race car... I took it to It's first outing at sandown (John Mott memorial) last weekend and managed to run a 1:43 whilst boiling the brake fluid and melting the pads and killing the clutch other than that it held up the whole day of thrashing. So now it's time for series 2 front disks and callipers convert the rear to disk and fit a front sway bar from the higher up sx model and fit a new clutch and se how it goes!
