hey guys.

i have an AE82 hatch and have a problem with the high beams.

when i pull the stalk towards me, the high beams flash fine. the interior high beam light comes on, the headlight high beams come on. however, when i push it to stay on. the interior high beam light COMES ON, but the headlights go out completely.

just wondering whether this would be relay related or stalk related. i have tried 2 other relays but didnt fix it (although i can't vouch for how reliable they are)

thanks guys,

Tim

mine does the same - push forward and drive in the dark for anything up to 10 secs - then they come to life - its not everytime tho - NFI what is causing it

they come on after 10 secs? really? ive never actually had em on for long enough actually. ill try that and see if it works.... i also have a spare corolla that i can grab the stalk off when i have time.

thanks so far guys.

Spoke to my old man (ex mechanic) he seems to think its a dirty connection at the steering column stalk - will be stripping mine this weekend and doing a check

i had the same thing with the ke70.

well it only did it when i half did the quad light conversion. seems when i joined my two earth wires into one it didnt like it for some reason so there may be a short on your head light connectors and what not

food for thought

pops also reckons it might be a load thing due to there being two circuits for the headlamps - so the split load combined with a dodgey connection may suck the big ones

hmm... ok.... i still havent tried anything. gotta replace the stalk eventually :P

by the way ruts, ur car is a hatch with a 4ac right?

yeah ive tried three different relays and still the same thing. i found out today that one of my friends with an excel has the same problem.... so that doesnt help too much. she just changed the lights over on her car though... i think

Advice from the old man is that it is a poor connection between the stem and the contact - needs the steering wheel pulled off - strip down the mechanism and clean all the gunge off - bit like the way points get dirty and plugs get dirty - all that spark builds up the crap.

excellent advice.... now all i need to do is smack the crap out of the steering wheel to get it off :D after 20 years. its quite hard....

(ive got a spare stalk too, so ill swap that)
