daddy Posted April 16, 2013 Report Posted April 16, 2013 Hi I'm new to the forum...well not really I just forgot my old username. Anyway I found a super rare te72 sportback with a blown 3tc for $400! I'm looking for an engine swap (or alternative ill get to that in a minute) for it. I'm not looking for anything too hard as I don't have a welder or anything special. So my ive narrowed it down to these: 1.) 1jzge fairly cheap, from what I heard the motor mounts line up with crossmember of the te72 2.) 2jzge same deal as above 3.) 7mge seems like a lot more fab involved however Ive seen more done than the 1/2 j. Cheap, reliable (with good gaskets) 4.) 4age fairly easy, cheap, unoriginal. Now for the alternative... Lately Ive been fascinated with an efi 3tc. Ive seen it done but there doesnt seem to be any good write ups about it. I understand I could get 3te (jdm fi variant) parts but they would be really hard to find and might get too expensive. Ive heard of swapping different heads that have efi with the harnesses, ecu, etc. but I'm not sure what would fit. If you guys could give me your input on what would be best in your opinion and any info on any of these swaps especially the efi conversion I would appreciate it! Quote
Jordanrolla Posted April 16, 2013 Report Posted April 16, 2013 4age would be the easiest cost effective to end power result. I wouldn't waste my time with a 3t efi, its 30 year old technology, sohc and pushrods. Anything thats a straight 6 cyl would also be a waste of time if your not going turbo, all that weight over the front wheel's will destroy the handling characteristics when you could achieve the same power to weight ratio with a 4cyl. My advice for a decent n/a cost effective swap, ca18de? Quote
love ke70 Posted April 16, 2013 Report Posted April 16, 2013 where are you located? and who says the engine mounts line up? Quote
daddy Posted April 16, 2013 Author Report Posted April 16, 2013 I live in Pennsylvania but I saw a build thread and the guy said they lined up. However, he did say that he would need to make a simple bracket. On top of that the guy said that the r154 tranny lines up with the te72 shifter hole but the tunnel is obviously too small. Jordanrolla ive heard that the 3tc can put down some impressive numbers. I'm also interested in the efi conversion because I go to school for engineering and that would be a pretty cool senior project, even if I do it 2 years early haha. I just need some info to get me started. Also, Idk where your from but a rwd ca18de is pretty much non existent around here. I couldnt find an s12 to save my life. Quote
LittleRedSpirit Posted April 16, 2013 Report Posted April 16, 2013 awg5412 is your original name, and it never was validated for some reason. Quote
ke70dave Posted April 16, 2013 Report Posted April 16, 2013 Converting an engine to EFI is a very interesting task, but its pretty tricky. and the only way to do it really is to for for a programable ecu, as any ecu you fudge to work on it just wont work perfectly. What ECU do you plan to use? if you are doing engineering, perhaps the megasquirt ecu is a viable option. Quote
love ke70 Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 One build thread says it works, I would have thought if it worked it would be widespread knowledge... do you have a link to thread? Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 might be from this thread, looks like the J and T engines mount in similar places once dummied in the car. http://www.tamparacing.com/forums/toyota-lexus-tech/510608-can't-believe-i-forgot-post-tr-82-corolla-1jz-swap.html Quote
love ke70 Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 Page not found I think 1J is legal in queensland now. If it bolted into my shell it would be hard to walk past hey... Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 (edited) Stupid links not working, does this work. EDIT: Nope. Bah. Edited April 17, 2013 by B.L.Z.BUB Quote
altezzaclub Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 Nope! Never! Not a fan.. Why put a heavy big six into a car designed for light 4cyls over the front axle? Fit an 18RG for period class, or a 4AGE if torque is not required, or hunt down one of the turbo'd 4cyls. Can you get the 3SGE anywhere? If you're happy to cross-breed, get an S2000 Honda motor. LittleRedSpirit Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 (edited) I'm still waiting for someone to fit a late gen lancer 2.4 alloy motor into one. A 4b12. Its essentially a mitsubishi 2azfe. Same power and torque, balance shafts, all alloy, and most likely easier to fit. Edited April 17, 2013 by LittleRedSpirit Quote
parrot Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 3TCgarage.com is US based and there are some seriously fast cars on that site. If you are keen on the 3TC route, have a look there. Quote
daddy Posted April 18, 2013 Author Report Posted April 18, 2013 Thanks for the replies guys. LittleRedSpirit whenever I made it, it said it was already in use. Weird. Maybe my fault haha but I think I will go 3tc efi. Something you guys should definitely check out is diyefi.org . It's all about pretty much making your own efi. Pretty fascinating stuff. However I think I will still probably go megasquirt just in case I decide to turbo down the line because I don't think some of the other programs will be able to support turbos. Quote
daddy Posted April 18, 2013 Author Report Posted April 18, 2013 I have two more weeks of school for summer. Whenever that is finished, I'll buy the sr5 if it's still for sale. Just to give me more time to think about it. It will be my first project that will be my own so it is a big step in my life haha. Do you guys know anything about megasquirt? I heard you have to make your own cps or something like that. And is there anyway to avoid coil on plug ignition? Id rather use dizzy just because I'm more familiar with that type. Thanks. Quote
