Pauly35 Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 Hey guys I have a noise constantly in my gearbox of my 7k I don't know what box it it (5-Spd) (could someone tell me where to find out in the box ? ) Now it's hard to explain so I'm going to list the symptoms and hopefully someone will k ow what's wrong. - noise sounds like something is grinding - noise disappears when clutch is in... - noise is on when I am accelerating in gear - but noise is NOT on when I'm rolling in gear (not accelerating) I'm considering swapping the box to my k40 because I can't handle the noise... YES I have changed the thrust bearing (twise) made no difference Any help would be great Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 (edited) I'm guessing this is in your KE35 by your other topics? If so then it'll be a K50 box by the sounds of things. They arent the strongest boxes to begin with (especially behind a 7k) so I'd say it may have some major internal issues. Have you dropped the box and inspected it internals? Might pay to find a K-T bellhousing and put a stronger box in. EDIT: Yep thats a KE55 K50 Have you been driving it... um... spiritedly? :P Edited March 30, 2013 by B.L.Z.BUB Quote
Taz_Rx Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 Tried changing the spiggot bearing? Can you hear it in neutral with the clutch out? Quote

EDIT: Yep thats a KE55 K50 Have you been driving it... um... spiritedly? :P Yes the same ke35, thanks for letting me now its a K50... i hope it doesnt have major internal issues, i like using the 5th gear as i do allot of highway driving, no i haven't dropped it and inspected it. only changed the thrust bearing. I'm going to drop it now and check it out, i hope its something to do with my clutch or something... haha i don't know what you meen by driving "spiritedly" ... i can say >no i don't try drift a 7K with no lock diff, stock suspension and stock everything else pretty much :P :P :P... more a daily driver for me. with a little kick when i need to go faster. haha [way better than my old 3K] Tried changing the spiggot bearing? Can you hear it in neutral with the clutch out? no i haven't, haven't pulled the box out yet.. YES it makes it in neutral with clutch out, then when i put clutch in it just goes away completely and the engine/gearbox sounds perfect. ? do you know what the deal is with that ? hahah Thanks guys Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 Sounds more clutch related than gearbox related. Quote
Pauly35 Posted March 31, 2013 Author Report Posted March 31, 2013 Sounds more clutch related than gearbox related. Thats a good thing :P for me to hear. thank you... so now that i know i have a 7k with k50 what clutch shouyld i get ? iv been meaning to looking into getting a new one if thats what the problem is.. do i get one to fit 7k or k50 i have no idea about this :| thanks Quote
GJM85 Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 It's the main shaft. It's weakest part of these transmissions. The slipper bearings wear out and the main shaft begins to gyrate which makes changing crunchy and destroys the synchos. Quote
altezzaclub Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 Is the noise any different in 4th gear to 3rd or 5th?? if it vanishes in 4th gear its the layshaft brgs, like my K50. Otherwise, mainshaft brgs. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 From what you've told us, for the sake of a $5 bearing and a couple of hours work I would be changing the spiggot bearing first. Wouldn't be the easiest thing to change with the engine still in the car, maybe remove the engine/box in one, split and change spiggot and put it all back in. Incase you're not aware the spiggot bearing is in the back end of the crank. Easiest to remove with wet torn up news paper! Lol Also if you have a 180mm (4k) flywheel then you just need a regular k series clutch kit. Quote

altezzaclub Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 whats the layshaft brgs ??? Two shafs in the g'box, the mainshaft has the sliding gears on it, which all come off leaving a plain splined shaft, and sadly the layshaft is made in one solid piece with the gears and extremely expensive roller bearings that run directly on the shaft, obviously made of unobtainium... Google image it. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 thankyou Actually disregard first bit. Clutch out means spiggot shouldn't be turning. But sounds like you're on to it now. Quote

altezzaclub Posted April 1, 2013 Report Posted April 1, 2013 Let us know how you go- I looked at it a couple of years ago adn just kept running the growly K50. The layshaft (or countershaft) does have a shaft through the gearset, I should have looked it up yesterday, so if the ends of that wear it shouldn't be too expensive. Still mroe than another gearbox mind you! 33311 is the input shaft, which get noisy at idle in neutral. 33321 is the mainshaft carrying the sliding gearset. 33411 is the layshaft carrying the counter gears. These are not in use in 4th gear, & so don't load the bearings on that shaft then. You need 33411A & 33411H, the spacer washers at each end, and maybe the shaft if its worn where the front bearing runs. I'm still planning on doing it one day with Rob, I'd like a real mechanic helping me with something like that! Quote
