make your clearances a bit tighter. if you look at the rockers where they push against the valve stems they wear. a feeler guage can't properly measure the gap. also the rocker bushes may be worn.

you could always try your old 3k rocker shaft and rockers if they are in better nick.

actually thinking about it, you are not getting timing chain noise are you? most 4k's only have single row chains. when they flog out bad they can rub on the inside of the timing cover amplifying the noise. a big screwdriver used as a stethoscope works well finding rattles on a k series. :faq:

Ahhh, good idea.

I'll check that out a bit later.

How hard would it be to convert the timing chain over from the 3K to the 4K?

Another update.....

After felix's response, I decided to strip the rocker gear off my 3K head and will fit it to the 4K head tomorrow.

I'll end up sourcing another inlet manifold at some point and get some headwork done to the 3K head and put that on the 4K block.

Then I'll do the carb and extractors. :faq:

Its got the 4K head on it. I havent touched the head yet.

The 3K head is still sitting on the old motor, plus is there really that much of a design difference between both heads?

I thought the only difference between the motors is the size of the bore?

the double row timing chain will swap straight over. check the condition of everything, you may or may not need a new chain and tensioner (the double row chains last for ages). biggest pain is having to drop the sump to pull the timing cover. :faq: if you do that, consider adding a reground cam while you have it apart. i "think" you can pull the lifters without having to remove the head (depending on sludge buildup), with a 3/4k anyway.

make sure you remove the little studs under the timing cover and replace with bolts.... will make it much easier if you ever pull the timing cover again, as you only need to drop the sump half as much.

with your heads: is the 3k one a bigport, with the welschplug on the back? if it has the plate with 4 bolts on the back of it, it will be pretty much identical to a 4k head. either way, a 3k head will give a bit more compression on a 4k.

was for me, i anticipated the stud issue when i first swapped in the 4k, so after pulling those 4 bolts, i was able to remove the cover

i think i had to lift it against the seal with a screwdriver, not something i would recommend.

oh well, there IS a right way to do it, not mine, but i did get away with cheating...........

the engine in the corolla goes rattle rattle rattle, rattle rattle rattle, rattle rattle rattle, the engine in the corolla goes rattle rattle rattle, alllllllll dayyyyyyy longgggggg.

W00t, post number 700!

Ok. Replaced the rocker gear on the 4K with the rocker gear off my 3K and its a little quieter. Still a noisy little bitch.

So my next question. How do I get the lifters out of the engine? What's everyone's methods?

Been a long time since I've updated this.

While the coupe is in getting its chassis rust issue done, I also took PV down to the chassis guy and he fixed my broken exhaust for nothing, so that was a bonus. Nothing a CIG welder can't fix :y:

I noticed u said before that u were thinking of putting some 14" mags on it, just as an idea, try 14" pre RA60 celica, corona or tarago steelies on it, get the centre caps and some chrome dress rims and they look pretty good with some low (lower than stock anyways) profile tyres. Good offset to, and cheap as I paid $100 for a set of four with dress rims, center caps & tyres :y:

The PV isnt even straight enough to contemplate whitewalls. Mate of mine has an SR20DE which he said he'd love to throw into the PV :y:
