hey fellas

i found this pic in the 'my pictures' folder under 'rollas'... i saved it off rollaclub (i think) ages ago.

Does anyone know what rims these are ?

I'm heaps sick of the rims i have at the moment ... The rims on my car are 15s and i'm just sick of the crappy ride they provide ( well my f@$ked front suspension may have somethin to do with it ...) . I'm also sick of paying $125+ for a half decent tyre.

The solution: drop my car on its nuts, and wack some hot 13 x 7s or somethin on it :locked: . These cars looks tops with only a set of 13s on them, just like this foto (courtesy of whoever owns it :) ) :

What do y'all think ...

here's a better angle ...

Yeah nick i found out that the last owner chopped the front suspension for some stupid reason :locked: ... the back is adjustable konis, i guess he ran out of money before he could do the front ?

Cheers again ...

You'll notice a crappier ride on 13's. Try 14's if its a big issue?

More sidewall flex for starters.

hmm

point taken! I was tryin to avoid low profile tyres, as these have less travel between the road or bump and the rim itself .. hence a bumpier ride. I haven't heard of sidewall flex, I'm guessing its just where the tyre will flex sideways when you hit a bump, making it a bit bouncy ?

Yes, pretty much. Because rubber is flexible it will absorb a sideways motion similar to as it would absorb a bump in the road; compress (tyre goes lower profile) then decompress. I presume (not sure) that in severe cases it could cause the tyre to be pushed off its beads, which would not make you a happy chappy.

Those rims look like Dragway 4 spokes(?).

13's wont make your ride bouncy. Ran them on my KE35 (225's on the rear on 6" rims) and never felt I had any problems. Hell it rode better than my VY wagon on 17's.

And you would have to be going hard to push a tyre of a rim..........

Hmmm...

The higher the aspect ratio of your tyres, basically, the softer ride they will provide. This is simply because there is a larger cushion of air between road and rim. However, this is making the assumption that all other variables are the same. Tyre pressure has a massive impact on this factor; higher pressure=less compliance in the cushion of air=rougher ride.

Another variable is the quality of the tyre. A higher quality tyre will likely offer a rougher ride, due to more plies in the sidewall, as a opposed to the single nylon ply found in shitty chinese tyres. More plies means less flex in the sidewall of the tyre under heavy lateral loads, such as those experienced in hard cornering. Flex is bad because it causes distortion of the tread face, which means far less ability to disperse water, and a smaller contact patch with the road.

Rolling a tyre off the rim is likely to occur in older cars (like ours), with supensions that place undue loads on the outside front tyres, which have been specified by the manufacturer with high (75 and higher) aspect ratios, low speed ratings(meaning less rigid under load) and low pressures(such as the 24psi specified in my ke30's owners manual). These specifications are usually a measure to compensate for the poor bump absorption qualities of their primitive suspensions, performance was not a priority.

However, us 'rolla drivers can usually get away with just putting about 30psi in them, 'cos a 900kg car isn't much stress on a modern tyre, no matter what brand.

joisus 24 psi ? thats hell low ... makes sense with what you were saying about poorer quality of standard suspension ... these things weren't an issue back in the 70s. I'd be running about 30psi in a set of 13s with normal profile tyre. Wouldn't something as low as 24psi cause excessive tyre wear? Fricken jap nuts

I did have 15's on my car, but i think because of the leaf spring setup in the back it was a little too bumpy for me.....so i went back to 14's. Much better ride.
