phwoah Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 hi guys i am new to the front wheel drive world and have no idea what to do to my nova hatch. its a 6af engine carbied and was wondering if there is some simple engine mods i could do to it and where i would find the parts and if it is possible to put power steering in it and what would be needed. can't find anything on ebay or anywhere else for that matter for the 6af but a lot for the 4af, would these parts be interchangable. don't tell me to do a engine change cause i have a 4agze but will be some time till i do the conversion so am just looking to beef up the 6af for now Quote
Ben-89 Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 (edited) You wont find much specifically for a 6af, so just search for 4af as most parts are interchangeable anyway 6af is 1.4 litres, not many people have played with 6af's so maybe a carby upgrade could be an option. RC member GJM85 had a how to guide as far upping the power gains from a carby a series engine. If you were to install power steering, a new column and rack specific for p/s would be required, it's a big job. Probably better for you to undertake that when you do the engine change. This should help you out. http://www.rollaclub.com/board/topic/40792-4a-fc-owners/ Edited February 24, 2013 by Ben-89 Quote
phwoah Posted February 24, 2013 Author Report Posted February 24, 2013 thanksdo u know if youcan put a weber on and who would sell the adaptor or twin weber/dellortos and where i could find a manifold to suit, would rather the twins if it is possible Quote
GJM85 Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 That's crazy talk. I don't believe there is anything in the way of carb upgrades for the a-fc series engines. There is so much pollution gear it'd be a big head ache for little to no gain. These engines are built for economy and to get the most power out of them, keep them clean and well maintained. A good quality air cleaner and a free flowing exhaust is the best you can do without spending big dollars. If its a tired old engine you can advance the timing and run premium fuel to get back a few jigawatts. Quote
phwoah Posted February 24, 2013 Author Report Posted February 24, 2013 cheers this is my first corolla or fwd for that matter so have no idea about them Quote
rthy Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 i wonder if the 6af head would bolt to the 7af block? Quote
Ben-89 Posted February 25, 2013 Report Posted February 25, 2013 There was a member on here with a 4afc who had a webber carby fitted and said the difference was noticeable. This was complemented by extractors and a non restrictive exhaust system. Quote
phwoah Posted February 25, 2013 Author Report Posted February 25, 2013 i have extractors on the way and will put in for a nice free flowing exhaust then will decide wether i think the weber will be a viable chose but all the advice is greatly appreciated Quote
Bowler Posted February 25, 2013 Report Posted February 25, 2013 i wonder if the 6af head would bolt to the 7af block? They would, but why? there are differences between port size between the 1.4 and 1.8... thanksdo u know if youcan put a weber on and who would sell the adaptor or twin weber/dellortos and where i could find a manifold to suit, would rather the twins if it is possible You'd be better off putting the money into your gze, before you fork out $1500 for twins, and carbs... at the end of the day, its possible to get a bit out of the engine, but you're better off swapping for the 4af, or just maintaining the 6a and keeping it happy...it will never get you in to trouble that way either Quote
ke70dave Posted February 25, 2013 Report Posted February 25, 2013 (edited) So its a 1.4L carby engine, forget about the fact its a 6af. To go faster, you need to get more air and fuel in, make more of a bang, and then get all that exhausted turd air out again. If you can't find a carby adaptor to suit your particular engine off the shelf, it might just be a case of the 4afc one bolts right on with no or minimal mods. have you measured the carby bolt spacing between a 4afc and your 6afc? just because it is not listed in the redline catalogue, doesnt mean it doesnt fit. And if it doesnt fit, how close is it? its just a peice of plastic/steel with a few bolts in it, can you mod it to fit? or can you make one from scratch? As for the carby itself, you wanna make sure its jetted to suit your engine, or you will be going knowwhere. carby jetting is somethi\ng i am yet to play with, but there is alot of good information about how to tune them and change the jets etc. As for exhaust, i found some extractors on ebay that said both 4afc and 6afc, so theres a good start. then just head on down to any exaust shop, tell them to put on your new extractors and a nice 2" exhuast to suit, put a few mufflers in, its only 1.4L so having it blow your ear drums out doesnt mean its making more power. Camshafts are a good way to make a few more hp, sure most camshafts joints might not list your engine, but have you called any up? most make camshafts by regrinding your old one. so if you give them your old one (or one you buy from the wreckers), they should be able to make you something up for you. i was quoted around $180 to do the same to my little suzuki camshaft. note, that you should do all mods (especially exhaust and camshaft) before you get the carburetta tuned to suit. as once you change something you will need to get it tuned to suit again. Also don't expect monumental hp increases with the above, but do expect a much better free reving engine that will be much nice to drive it will make a good noise as well! Oh yeah, if you scrounge around wreckers for parts and DIY most of this yourself, it will be relatively cheap. but if you start paying people to do things (installing carbies, installing camshafts etc), the above mods may cost you upwards of 2000 bucks.... GJM85 Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 Unfortunately for the 6a/4a series carbies tuning goes as far as idle mixture and idle speed. Getting different size jets would err on the ugly side of impossible. And they have a bajillion holes and pollutiomajiggies. Quote
