5ksev Posted February 16, 2013 Report Posted February 16, 2013 hey all! been a long time since iv posted in here.. iv recently gone out and gotten another ke70, as my old one is in the process of getting an sr20det upgrade.. iv done some work to my new 4k, head decked to 9.8:1 tighe 424 camshaft ( 30/70 .450 lift 276 dur ) heavy duty valve springs new gaskets through-out new clutch i HAVE gotten a weber 28/36 carby for it, but it hasnt arrived yet.. so heres the story.. i put it all together, put the factory carby back on, just to try start it and have a listen.. i tried starting it.. to start with it dosnt start, then 5-10sec later it will start, but will only run with my foot flat to the floor and it revs @ around 1200-1500 rpm? as soon as i remove my foot it stalls. I'm confident that i have cam timing right, and ignition timing is fairly close.. could the factory 4k carby be the problem? or is it timing? Quote
GJM85 Posted February 16, 2013 Report Posted February 16, 2013 Its is more than likely cam timing. turn your donk round to tdc on cylinder 1. (timing mark at 0 & rotor button at terminal 1). Now turn it another 360°. This is where the overlap of both valves of the first cylinder can be measured. Use a stanley knife blade across the top of the valve retainers. They should be level. If not, turn the crank until both retainers are level in the overlap. Check your timing mark on the crank and you should see how many degrees out your cam is. Quote
5ksev Posted February 17, 2013 Author Report Posted February 17, 2013 Had another look at it today.. Turns out the dizzy was retarded By about 30-40* Thanks for the advice anyway! Quote
RainWarriorDregs Posted February 17, 2013 Report Posted February 17, 2013 Gavin i think you just solved an issue i have been having for a while. thankyou Quote
ke70dave Posted February 17, 2013 Report Posted February 17, 2013 (edited) It could be a numeber of things i guess. I would basically start with diagnosis and hopefully you find a problem. -does the carby have a fuel cutoff solenoid? and can you hear it clicking with ignition? -check the cam timing above, if you have a compression tester give it a go just to confirm. -now id say its ignition timing, do you have a timing light? if so get it going and see how far out it is. does it sound a bit "throaty" when you get it going? a bit asmatic? perhaps the timing is way retarded. also is it really easy to turn over with starter motor? or does the engine struggle to turn over?
