i have a toyota corolla cs 85-87 model. it was given to me as a christmas present. but it came with a dodgy paint job and nothing done to it. i have lots of money and many ideas of what to do. I want to install a pioneer sound system which would set me back about 500 or more if i want a head unit, sub, an amp and 3 way speakers. i also want to get extractor and a sports exhuast system. another thing i forgot to mention is a new paint job and rims. if anyone has any other ideas please tell me id like to hear from ya

cheers -RoBeRtO- ;)

Welcome aboard, Roberto. ;)

One thing I can suggest is try not to limit your sound by becoming a "sponsor wanna be" for a commercial brand. Mix and match with piece you know that will work to suit your taste in sound. You could either go a Clarion or Pioneer entry level head unit, JVC head unit or even VDO Dayton make good units for dollar value. Speakers could see Jaycar Kevlars, or Kenwoods, Kicker EX series... Id be seeing a nice set of splits up front, 6" coaxial speakers on the rear shelf, a decent 12" sub (Kicker Comp would be a nice one to get) and because you don't want to spend so much on stereo, either a 4 channel to bridge 2 channels to run your sub and the other two remaining to run your fronts and just run the rears off the deck and you should be a happy little camper with that :S

If you just want to have a little bit more grunt to your existing setup, the sports exhaust system isnt a bad option. It wont be a dramatic power upgrade, but the motor will breathe abit better. Either Genie, Pacemaker or Redback systems will work a treat. Paint job will depend on your taste in color and also rims.. well.. what were you chasing in particular? 15s? 16s? 17s?

Is your car twincam?

e.g 4AGE engine or is it the crappy 4AC engine?

I'd think about getting a twincam engine into it before i'd spend a CENT on a 4AC.

its not a twincam unfortuntely, but the engines been rebuilt. whats wrong with the 4ac?

hey tiger thanks for your advice. your absoultley right about the sponsor wannabe bit. ;). the kicker comp sub sounds good.thank you for the advice about the audio setup i will do just that. about the rims, uh i was chasing 15's or 16's are good but I'm leaving them till last because they will cost the most unless i find cheap deals. pacemaker is well known so i will go with that for my exhaust and extractors. another idea i had was to put a hood scoop on it. cut a hole in the hood and put it on. i thought that could allow more airflow. it wouldnt do much but it should do for now.

Nothing really, unless you'd like some performance.

upgrading a 4AC is like masturbation... its fun but you don't get anywhere

I wouldn't spend a cent on a 4AC

so if i decide to put a turbo charger in its not worth it. i would love a bit more power but if i don't get anywhere theres no point i guess?....

Haha

Turbo on a 4AC...

Nah, I wouldn't bother. SOme people have tried making power out of them. They are notorious for blowing headgaskets.

For the money you'd spend to make a 4AC more powerful, you could spend that on a 4AGE (which is not far from a bolt-in conversion) and have "Reliable" ;)

how much do you think a 4AGE set me back money wise?

4AGE motors average second hand with warrantiy around the $1000-$1500 mark. With loom and all... ROUGHLY. Not a definite, but yeah, it is the going price.

I think there are lots of different kind of good headgaskets for -GE and -GZE engines, I think those should fit to plain 4A-C engines as well. But I think also it´s better to use your money to 4A-G series engine.

i shall take the advice. with the audio, how much would a kicker comp sub enclosed in a box cost me?

I was at autobarn on saturday and saw some mad subwoofers. I only had 110 dollars. I talked to the auto barn audio guy, saying i only had $110. so he said i can take one of his 600W 12inch subwoofer enclosed in a box for 110. what a bargain. i talk prices down pretty good.

I just managed to score RollaGurl a 12" Kicker Freeair 25th Anniversary edition sub (one of the rare ones with the chrome plated cast aluminium baskets) in a ported box for $150 :locked: An absolute steal.

What sub was it that you purchased?
