Hey guys,

Here is my latest purchase!

A 1987 Toyota AW11 SC with an SC14 fitted. I picked it up for the bargain price of $1,500 because the previous owner was desperate to get rid of it for some more shed space!

I had been looking for another fun car to use for hills work and weekend motorsport for sometime. The idea was to get something that was almost ready to go and required very little work, as I still want to keep modding the KE20. Like every other young drift-boy in Melbourne I had been looking at R32s and 180s, but it became increasingly hard to find one that had not been thrashed or was a little dodgy! Also both of these cars were really not me..

After riding in an AW11 with and over-driven SC12 up at DECA, and driving a mates N/A one I was sold on the idea of an MR2.

I browsed a little further and came across a few MR2's but none that were quite right for me. When this one came up it wasn't really turn key as I'd planned, but who could say no at the price!

The good;

  • Factory SC with targa roof
  • Adjustable shocks
  • SC14

The bad

  • A little rust in the rear guard
  • Slipping clutch
  • Worn brake rotors and flogged pads
  • Dirty as all hell! -I think he must have sat doing doughies in a puddle or something, it was amazing the amount of crap we found under the car!

So far i have fitted a new Exedy HD Organic clutch, EBC red stuff pads all round, new rear rotors, repaired the rust, wet-vacced the carpet/seats, pressure washed/de-greased underneath. I still need to go for a RWC and get the car rego'd again and then I can enjoy it/do some motorsport.

In time I will upgrade a few things on the motor to squeeze some more power out, and also fit coilovers/wheels.

The current wheels are a nice style but are a horrible offset! 15x6.5 +47! :down:

I am thinking I will go for 15x8 +25 with some decent quality 195/50/15s. That should really improve the image of the car and take away from the body imperfections.

The other part of the story is I couldn't bring home another un-rego'd car or Mum and Dad would crack the shits! So I managed to negotiate storing the MR2 at a friend of a friends place untill it is rego'd. He also has an AW11 with an SC14! The agreement was that i could store the car at his place if I helped part out another AW11 SC he had in the front yard. This has also meant I could salvage a few parts from that shell!

Everything really has fallen into place with this car :)

When I brought it back to my mates place and gave it a wash;

Looks tidy, the blue is much nicer than red or white for AW11's

It does indeed, full kit even intact and the blue does look good.

Hey guys,

Here are a few more recent pics of the car and the 1/4 repair, the car is also now registered :)

Unfortunately I have a charging issue so the car was flatbed-towed yesterday from the Geelong Rd :/

There are a few more things to iron out including a good service, and then I will drive the car as is for a while whilst the KE20 gets some more love.

Once I have sorted a motor and suspension in the rolla I will give this some nice fitment/coilovers and also tidy up the paint on the front and rear bars.

I really can't wait to sort the charging issue as this car is a blast to drive! I went for a 'topless' hills run last week with a mate's MX-5 and lightly modded '75 911 Targa, and can safely say the MR is a quick as the Porsche! :)

Hahaha yep, good mates from High School.

Not many red-heads rolling round Porsche's with a sticker stating "My other car is a Datsun"!

his torana was much much cooler hahaha.

I've met Heath a few times when I've been down in Vic visiting other torana friends (Matt with the orange LX hatch)

I suppose you might know Brad (with the Red UC and WRX goon) as well then?

Sorry for the late reply!

Yeah I'm mates with Brad and Mick as well, they are great guys! We will be having a 'car-b-que' tonight with them all lol

When cash and shed space permits I will be building an LX hatch with a 355 stroker on either LPG or E85, bit of a 'closet Torana browser' as you are a closet Corolla browser lol! In all seriousness I get into all cars that are old and cool :)

Recently I changed the rear wheel bearings and took it up to a DECA day outside Shepp, awesome fun!

Needs an alignment and tyres pretty badly, struggled for front end grip. Cash is a little short now I'm back to uni but it will be lowered and wheel aligned soon in prep for a Morwell hillclimb day.

Few vids for those interested;

Credits to emts on SAU for the below video, thanks heaps!

Interesting for me to see how the car behaves from outside, definitely single pegging hard! Need to get a rear ARB and LSD soon too..

I'm lowering the car this week before heading to a Haunted Hills practice day on Sunday, can't wait!

Hey guys,

I lowered the car last week before our Haunted Hills day, and now it has a much firmer ride and handles a bit better with the help of some more camber and castor. I was surprised how much the kings brought the car down, it really accentuates the need for some wider/better offset wheels!

I managed to borrow some 16x7.5 +35 BBS wheels off a mate with better tyres for Sunday, and so that helped with grip a bit.

We had a dry morning on the track but then at lunchtime it rained so for the first half of the arvo we had a lot of wheelspin and not much else!

It was good to get more of a feel for the car and find out what needs tweaking. I had one hairy moment as shown in the vids but thankfully managed to save it somehow! lol

I'm keen to get some semi-slicks on the car and also adjustable bars and an LSD in the near future.

Might not go as extreme as this :P;

Here are some videos from the mornings session; (not all the MR2 ones have been uploaded yet but I will do so tonight)

I think my rear RH CV might be on the way out so I'm gonna park it up until I have a chance to give the car a good work-over.

Cheers,

Dougal

Turns out what I had thought was a CV issue was just the horrible tyres that were out of round causing vibrations!

At long last my car has some decent fitment!

After a bit of measuring and a trial fit of another mates wheels I came to the conclusion that 15x8+25 would be an ideal size for my car. Once my tax return came through I purchased a set of gold Enkei 92's from eBay USA;

After some consideration I opted for a set of Yokohama AD08r's in 205/50/15. A mate also bought a set for his SR20DET 1600 at the same time so we got a good deal. By all accounts they are the best street tyre short of a semi slick, and after spending most of the weekend in the twisties I tend to agree!

This wheel/tyre change and an alignment last week has completely changed the car! From memory I now have 6-7 degrees caster, 0 front toe, -1.5 degrees front camber, 3mm total rear toe in, and a bit over -1 degree rear camber. When I went in for the alignment we found the RHR toe link was bent and that wheel alone had 7.5mm toe out!

I have also purchased a whiteline rear bar and will be mounting that up soon.

Loving driving this car now! :D

Here are some happy snaps from some of the ks I did with my mate on the weekend;
