Pauly35 Posted November 26, 2012 Report Posted November 26, 2012 (edited) Hi guys I'm l looking at what options I have to get a little more power on my 7k befor I get it tuned. I'm running 1 &3/4 inch exhaust , electronic ignition, 40m weber sidedraft. Pretty basic setup. I'm not looking to race competitivly but I wouldn't mind later on just for fun. I was thinking of I get a better cam ( although I don't know where to find one for a 7k) ps there is one on eBay but I don't know how to read the specs and tell what it's good for The engine was a 7k-e converted.... I don't know why .... But that's how I got it. Iv seen the "how to build a tough k engine" write up but I don't exactly know how to approach a 7k because I'm not that experienced in engine building. I also don't want to do a full rebuild, Budget 1200 max Just post up your opinions :) Cheers Edited November 27, 2012 by Pauly35 Quote
altezzaclub Posted November 27, 2012 Report Posted November 27, 2012 Cam is easy, the big names will have a cam grind to suit. Quite likely they can cut any of the 4K profiles onto it. I assume the bore-stroke ratio will mean a milder cam with good lift, rather than a 7000rpm 285deg cam. If the bearings and rings are good, there's not much else to do apart from what you have done and get a cam cut. So long as the porting was lined up when they fitted the carb and manifold it should all go well. If you pull the head off for something else you could get it skimmed for higher compression & take a look at the combustion chamber shaping and porting. If you pull the motor down sometime you could get the flywheel lightened and the bottom end balanced. Quote
GJM85 Posted November 28, 2012 Report Posted November 28, 2012 (edited) Extractors and a 2 inch exaust maybe even a 2 1/4 will be a massive improvement. If you've little experience in engine work, a cam change will be a bit of a challenge. I've tried to change a cam with the engine in the car without success. The sump really needs to come off and by the time you get the cam out the only thing left in/on the block is the crank and pistons and water pump. It can be done but it takes experience. If your keen to learn, your in a position to be without the car for a week or more, have access to tools and an engine crane then go for it. Edited November 28, 2012 by GJM85 Quote
