Your answer is that you don't need to do this now until you can afford it.

Apprentices should stick to stock motors and chassis. I know I couldn't have done a modified car with a $6 and hour wage when I was an apprentice.

 

Just do a lot of research and save what you can over the next couple of years and you should be able to do it. It may well be easier to do a 20v conversion if you want to continue to use a stock ecu.
