coln72 Posted January 15, 2013 Report Posted January 15, 2013 Sounds good but slow. Eg. 2 ke20's 1 - 5k with a mild cam revved well but no noticible drop in bottom end 2 - 4k with a big cam, compression etc. Cam would come in hard at around 4000rpm Which do you think was quicker????????? It wasn't the 4K. In every event enered, the milder motor ate the 4K with the same even with the driver. There was over a car length in it at the end of the 1/8th mile. Quote
GJM85 Posted January 16, 2013 Report Posted January 16, 2013 (edited) I'm using a stock 4k cam in my 5k. As long as I shift when the cam peaks it thunders up to 75mph. Winding out sounds cool but doesn't do much in the way of gains. Problems come to mind when running big lift in a high rpm engine. A lot of distance to travel in a short time at 7200rpm. That valve would be opening 60 times a second. Excess inertia wold destroy that top end. Making it not overly reliable. Duration is what you want... Edited January 16, 2013 by GJM85 Quote
coln72 Posted January 16, 2013 Report Posted January 16, 2013 (edited) Torque FTW!! Yep. As the old saying goes "Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races" Edited January 16, 2013 by coln72 Quote
philbey Posted January 18, 2013 Report Posted January 18, 2013 (edited) Haters be hatin. Go with big cams and drive it like you stole it. Edited January 18, 2013 by philbey Quote
coln72 Posted January 18, 2013 Report Posted January 18, 2013 Not hatin' Love the sound of a big cam and webers. Usually because it meant that they were easy pickins for me :) Big cams can also cause issues further down the driveline too. My Uncles FX had a huge cam, to the point that the throttle linkage needed to be changed as the motor rocking would cause the throttle to open and close. Anyway, the constant loping of the cam when running around town, loading and unloading things like the gearbox and diff, caused them to wear quickly. Then again, it was only an Opel gearbox in it though................... Quote
philbey Posted January 20, 2013 Report Posted January 20, 2013 Yeh I was just razzin ya haha. I get away with a big cam because of the stock flywheel. My car hauls arse though, stil has reasonable bottom end too. Quote
coln72 Posted January 20, 2013 Report Posted January 20, 2013 My ke20 was the same. Stock flywheel, reasonable bottom end and 7500rpm plus top end :) I say plus as thats where the shift light was set ans at times I was a little busy steering to take much notice.............. Quote
timbo Posted January 21, 2013 Report Posted January 21, 2013 I've got TRD 272's in my small port. Good difference from stock small port to big port cams and crazy difference to the 272's! Lumpy and hard to idle but you learn how to keep it from stalling and adjust idle carefully. Quote
RhysE Posted January 24, 2013 Author Report Posted January 24, 2013 Timbo is that on stock Ecu aswell ? Quote
timbo Posted January 25, 2013 Report Posted January 25, 2013 Yes mate, JDM bigport loom and ecu. I'm sure that they'd run on other 4A ecu's, bigport or smallport. Quote
TRD ke70 Posted January 25, 2013 Report Posted January 25, 2013 To reduce the BAD effects of a big cam and gain some more hp/torque in the bottom end, research exhaust reversion! Or to put it another way, bring the cam on earlier!! Quote
RhysE Posted January 25, 2013 Author Report Posted January 25, 2013 Things have changed and I'm going to end up with a bigport now so dunno if it changes much but I'd like to run stock ecu and some decent cams what would be best ? Quote
filfrederick Posted January 25, 2013 Report Posted January 25, 2013 I Had 294s in my twincam but only 8.2mm lift, they were ok for the street if i kept the cam timing fairly mild, but going for all-out power they got old fairly quick, having to beat the hell out of it just to do a hillstart gets some funny looks. like timbo said around 270 would be my vote. RhysE Posted January 25, 2013 Author Report Posted January 25, 2013 Hmm I was looking into 272/272 woul that be a good or bad choice ? Will be tryin to run them on stock Ecu if possible ? The car is being built or daily/weekender and occasional track day Quote
