Mark90 Posted December 10, 2013 Author Report Posted December 10, 2013 Yeah using the W40 bellhousing that is currently fitted to the car. Getting the W50 ready with slave cylinder fitted then just swap it all over in one session. Quote
SimonM Posted December 10, 2013 Report Posted December 10, 2013 excuse my ignorance and lack of effort to google it, but what's the difference between the W40 and W50? Quote
SimonM Posted December 10, 2013 Report Posted December 10, 2013 scratch that, googled it. 5 speed. Is this the one you bought? http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/craigburn-farm/engine-engine-parts-transmission/w50-gearbox-bellhousing-5-speed-manual-good-condition-rare-/1032993391 Quote
SimonM Posted December 10, 2013 Report Posted December 10, 2013 sweet. Got a new head for mine coming in the post, so once I've got her running again I might think about looking for one myself. By then I'll have two experts to consult! :P Quote
glenpos Posted December 11, 2013 Report Posted December 11, 2013 and ill be the only one without one haha Quote
Mark90 Posted December 11, 2013 Author Report Posted December 11, 2013 Huh? You have a W50 don't ya glen? Quote
glenpos Posted December 11, 2013 Report Posted December 11, 2013 in the shed haha, had it in for a few weeks, then the bearings shat themselfs, i got it off hard rubish for free as someone chucked it, must have sat outside for a while and got all rusty inside, so now running a w40, sucks balls haha Quote
Mark90 Posted December 12, 2013 Author Report Posted December 12, 2013 Ahhhh that sucks! I reckon I'll keep my 40 just in case things go wrong. The W40 jams up sometimes but better than nothing if the 50 doesn't work out Quote
Mark90 Posted December 28, 2013 Author Report Posted December 28, 2013 (edited) EDIT: no idea why the last two pics are sideways, stoopid iPhones. ... So! Started the conversion yesterday. Was looking pretty simple. The bracket turned out great, I did mine pretty different to yours though Glenn. It has three bolts holding it in. We had to play around with it a little to get the slave cylinder rod to not sit on an angle (pointing outwards from the box). But it's all square and solid as. I bought a clutch for the W50 - which was wrong, turns out I needed to use a W40 clutch. So I got a fresh one (luckily I found one locally). Went to put the box in and the gearbox mount is further back on the W50 than it was on the W40, and doesn't line up at all with the cross member mounts. So I've got some steel and will be making up a whole new crossmember on Monday, then she'll be sweet! Here's some crap progress pics, and a pic of how far out the mounts were. I have heaps more pics, just picked these to show the bracket and how the box didn't line up haha. Will put up picks of the crossmember on Monday. Edited December 28, 2013 by Mark90 Quote
glenpos Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 looks good mate, i wasn't game to drill a hole further back as i didn't want to drill through to the inside haha, plate looks nice, i'll do mine a bit nicer when i get another box, made it a bit crap as i wasn't sure it would all work haha, thought the x member might be like that, my car has the same holes, but then more holes further back so was easy as, should be sweet though Quote
Mark90 Posted December 28, 2013 Author Report Posted December 28, 2013 Thanks pal! Yeah I was a little annoyed about the crossmember not lining up but happy that it'll all fit and work out soon! Quote
glenpos Posted December 29, 2013 Report Posted December 29, 2013 i think i said it wouldn't didn't i, can't remember though haha Quote
Mark90 Posted January 4, 2014 Author Report Posted January 4, 2014 Well this beast is now rocking a 5 speed. Pretty happy with the outcome, sits on 3000rpm doing 100kph, rather than the 4000 it used to sit on. A lot quieter to cruise in and can get her over 80mph (130kph) pretty easy. Crap pictures again but here's the crossmember we made up, the steel is 10mm thick so it's definitely not going anywhere haha Quote
