Howdy Rollaclub/KE70.com,

I'm looking at engine options for my panelvan and was just wondering what advice or experiences some of you guys might have to add.

At the moment the panelvan has a 4K 5speed in it with extractors 2'' exhaust and a webber carb. I have a few schools of thought as to what to do with it.

option 1- Work the 4K a bit harder... cam, head work and maybe forced induction.

Option 2- source a 5K. cam, carb, exhaust and thinking about supercharging it. (not sure on pitfalls/difficulties and tuning)

Option 3- 4AGE with basic mods, the only thing that turns me off this idea is the amount of work to get the car legal in SA and the cost of the conversion. (as i would have to replace the whole drivetrain and the car would be off the road for an extensive time).

Ok so, they seem to be the most viable options. keeping in mind the car will be streeted and needs to remain somewhat reliable.

any advice is appreciated, I know this question has been done to death. I'm particularly interested in whats involved in charging a K series motor. (which charger, anypitfalls in tuning and how other people have set them up.

Cheers Brendan.

And a picture of the van, why? because Ksev. :)

Bore the 4K to take 5K pistons, so you keep the solid lifter setup.. Have it sonic tested to make sure the walls are fine, and if they are badly corroded then just grab another 4K block from the wreckers & test that.

If you're keen, have the crankshaft lightened and knife-edged, certainly lighten the flywheel and have everything balanced. You could make a K/T oil pump combination with more capacity, or buy a new K pump.

Have the head cleaned up, skim 25thou off, and fit quad carbs from a motorbike. Match that with a 280-290deg cam so it is all still quite streetable, and have the rocker pedestals machined to keep the correct ratio with the new valve springs.

Go have fun!

One day I'll do it, I reckon it will be quicker than a stock 4AGE & astound a lot of people.

If you're even considering forced induction on a 4k I would go a 4AGE more power less money I reckon.

Also stock generally never breaks whereas aftermarket stuff generally does and has nowhere near the the amount of design and funding that toyota put into a motor. Most car manufactures testing goes into reliability.

Your looks to be in nice condition.

Purely my opinion.

I think if you're worried about the 4AGE legality then you should be equally worried about turbo/supercharging. You've pretty much listed them in order of expense and difficultly. How much do you want to invest in the car and what do you want from it? As you've got a lot of the supporting mods already I reckon the 5K would be worthwhile. It shouldn't attract too much attention. Maybe cam and head work that.

+1 for 7k, lots of Nm at low revs to light up the rears (not sure if the kbox can handle the raw 1800cc of beast?)

ke70 to 4age conversion will endup costing alot more (crossmemebers, pedal box, etc.) unless you find someone selling the complete setup for cheap.

but in the long run the 4age will give you more options...
