kenoath Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 Hey my name is Kenny I'm from brisbane but moved to melbourne about a year ago. I thought I would post up my rolla that I got about 3 months ago have slowly been getting her ready for RWC. The 4K while being nice and clean is blowing alot of smoke under power. Can't wait to get something more powerfull under the hood. I want to build this car up as being a ae86 in granpas cardigan. So as you expect it has a 4age on the way. I also have a shed load of parts waiting to go in once I have passed the road worthy certificate. Like these Hopeing to use the experience and advice of others on this site too get a good understanding of what not to do. Quote
7shades Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 Well you're starting with suspension, so you're already doing the right thing :) Quote
altezzaclub Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 Damm that looks nice! No rust?? What did you pay for it? Quote
kenoath Posted August 4, 2012 Author Report Posted August 4, 2012 (edited) There was a little bit of rust above the tail lights and I got it cheap off ebay. It has had 2 owners in one family. There is a log book from 1984 of every trip taken and how many liters of fuel used. The first modification I did to it was upgradeing the noodle rear swaybar to a 20mm adjustable whiteline. Then last night i finished installing rack mount bushes, front sway bar bushes, swaybar link bushes, rack ends and extra lock spacer. Trying to get everything sorted in time for the next drift matsuri. Edited August 4, 2012 by kenoath Quote
kenoath Posted August 9, 2012 Author Report Posted August 9, 2012 I don't know if i want to fork out the $1500 it will cost to get a 4age to put in this. Is it really worth while? Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 (edited) Yes. I wouldn't pay $1500 for a 4AGE though. Unless thats your price on buying and installing it. Or the motor is worked. Edited August 9, 2012 by B.L.Z.BUB Quote
kenoath Posted August 9, 2012 Author Report Posted August 9, 2012 No for $200 I can get a rwd bigport but all the parts needed fo the conversion add up quickly. Quote
altezzaclub Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 Is it really worth while? What are your options? -A 'T' series?? Probably as much work and still not as good. -Another RWD motor entirely, a Beams 3SGE or an MX5 or Honda S2000. Just as much work but a newer motor. -Stick with a K and get a 1500cc or an 1800cc version. Terribly dated and never going to go as well as a DOHC. Depends how fast you want to go I suppose. Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 Apart from a K motor upgrade any other option is gonna be expensive no matter what (generally). Even with the flat cap tax a 4AGE conversion is still probably going to be the easiest and cheapest. But to get the same power from a 5/7K could run into the same $$$'s with a lot more effort. You have to decide which route you want to take. You could always go the T route but as Altezza said, same work, less bang for your buck. Quote
swampgarage Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 (edited) Is it really worth while? In a word "Yes". In two words "Hell Yes!" Go from the most boring car on earth to something really fun in a few easy steps. You're pretty much repeating what we've done this year, right down to the colour of the car :D We took a wrecked jdm 86 and put all the mechanicals and electrics into a ke70 shell. Everything that made the ke70 work went in the bin. We put some high quality but not too stiff suspension in it and for minimal expenditure, we have a car that is fantastic to drive and competitive both on road and off. My build thread here http://www.rollaclub...603-swamp-ke70/ And a video of how it will drive with a healthy bigport 4age and good suspension. Edited August 9, 2012 by swampgarage Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 In a word "Yes". In two words "Hell Yes!" My 4AGE is old and sick and I'm running a lot more weight than Steve is and its still peppy and fun, hit some hills and some corners and wow, fun turns to happy exciting in the pants. And I'm running shopped springs with shit shocks in the front, damn I need to put these coil overs in. Quote
kickn5k Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 I don't know if i want to fork out the $1500 it will cost to get a 4age to put in this. Is it really worth while? I built my supercharged, EFI setup for my 5K for $1,500. Made 98-104rwkw(depending on which dyno I used) on 9psi. Still want a 4age?? :) Don't listen to me though, I'm now on a stupidly expensive journey to see how much power a 5K turbo'd will actually make. So it's safe to say I love "K's" with a passion!! Seeing as your wanting an 86 in 70 clothing, it should have a 4AGE. It is your car at the end of the day and what you do with it is totally up to you. Nice car at that, good pick up. :) Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 I almost decided to spend 3 grand on my 5k and make it a monster engine for Cop Bait, then bought a RWC/REGO 4AGE KE70 (AKA Peanut Bait) for $2900 instead. So many options Quote
