Jono.C Posted August 1, 2012 Report Posted August 1, 2012 I'm most likely going a whiteline swaybar for my ke10. There's the issue of the brake calipers hitting when you switch to disk brake.. So I had the though of swapping struts side to side so the calipers are now at the rear and don't interfere Can anyone see any problems with this? I was thinking the disks will now be spinning opposite directions than they previously were.. and I'm unsure whether this would have any negative effects or I'm just overthinking it? Cheers! Quote
flyinwall Posted August 1, 2012 Report Posted August 1, 2012 think about this... mk2 cortina brakes are like corolla brakes but mk2 cortina GT brakes are as you described that you are planning as in turned 180 degrees but you don't have to swap the struts just turn the backing plates 180 degrees Quote
Jono.C Posted August 1, 2012 Author Report Posted August 1, 2012 (edited) Yeah I thought about that after I wrote it hahah *Edit, But, The calipers will still need to be swapped side to side in that case or else they'll be upside down. and the bleeder will be at the bottom Edited August 2, 2012 by Jono.C Quote
Jono.C Posted August 2, 2012 Author Report Posted August 2, 2012 Basically my concern was just is having the caliper at the rear going to have any negative effect on it, I'm pretty sure it'll be right but doesn't hurt for a second opinion Quote
ke70dave Posted August 2, 2012 Report Posted August 2, 2012 hmmmm thats an interesting one. ive never seen any evidence to suggest a brake caliper is designed for the disc to sprin in one direction. given your brakes work good in reverse usually.... i guess if you think about it from an alignemnt point of view, does anything you have done have an effect on : -camber (what did you do with the strut tops) -castor (what did you do with the strut tops) -toe (nope no problem as tie rod connects to steering arm) -king pin inclination (i can't see how you would have changed this given you havent modified the stub axel right?) The only real drama i can see is the little bracket for the brake hose, which might work anyway? Quote
irokin Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 IIRC TA22s had trailing calipers from factory. The hard line came out forward of the strut and the hose ran back to the caliper. Why swap the struts? Can't you just swap the backing plates? If you're worried about the disks spinning the wrong direction then just keep the hubs on their original side. The only real drama i can see is the little bracket for the brake hose, which might work anyway? I think hose routing may cause more drama than expected. Quote
Jono.C Posted August 4, 2012 Author Report Posted August 4, 2012 Yeah well I was having both struts out of the car so that's just the say I thought of it originally, I can rotate the brackets but calipers will need to be swapped either side Quote
styler Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 (edited) ^^^ Yeah that would work, bit easier than swapping struts really! Just have to make sure the mounting flange is square or rectangle and not the one bolt off pattern else you would have to swap struts after all as the mounting plate won't line up with the bolt holes when rotated or swapped side to side if that sounds right... Jono.C Posted August 4, 2012 Author Report Posted August 4, 2012 Yeah ke10 is 4 bolt square unlike ke70/ ae86.. Which was why i was thinking of swapping struts originally until i remembered they were different.. As i said the main reason for thinking of just swapping the entire struts over is they'll be out of the car at the same time anyway The struts are identical side to side so there's nothing really to worry about camber or castor wise i should imagine As Dave and Irokin pointed out i think my biggest issue will be brake hoses.. I might pick off the bracket and weld it to the side of the strut, so it just goes in one side, out the other and straight down into the caliper if you get what i mean Quote
philbey Posted August 5, 2012 Report Posted August 5, 2012 (edited) Rather than bother flipping discs etc I was going to chop the end off my swaybar arms , weld blade sytyle ends to the swaybar and run adjustable drop links with multiple holes for adjustable stiffness.
