love ke70 Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 (edited) hey everyone, my unbreakable 4k...kinda broke was just coming home from selling and delivering my spare 4k, k50 and ke70 diff and coming out of the tolls with the empty trailer on i thrash it (its almost law that you thrash it coming out of the tolls :y:) and she sees around the redline in first, up to about 4500 in second then just normal driving but we notice as we carry on up the road shes one very sick little girl, feels like shes only running on 3 so bring her home, and sure enough, cylinder 3 is doing nothing different when u pull the lead off itl. so this morning did a quick test on the plug and lead, no worries. pull the rocker cover off and have a look, the pushrod on number 3 is sitting off to the side, so i pick it up and remove it, easy as that now my question is, what damage may have occured driving 40 or 50 k's with the engine in this condition? and can i just put the pushrod back in and rotate the engine until it comes up against the rocker again, or will it not sit back in properly? also why would it do this? because i set the tappet clearances about 3 months ago, and there wasnt any tappet noise to speak of, could it have been valve bounce? cheers guys :P Edited February 1, 2006 by love ke70 Quote

love ke70 Posted February 1, 2006 Author Report Posted February 1, 2006 fixeded :P i spoke to dad and he said the cam follower can only move so far so should the pushrod should go straight back in, and it did when i looked closer it looks like the adjusting screw had risen a fair way, so I'm thinking thats how it got loose enough to fall out the side if you throw abit of valve bounce it wouldnt take much with it slackened off how it was. prob explains the rattle i was getting on start up. so yeah, i slid the pushrod back in, adjusted the screw back down to hold onto the pushrod, turned it around so i could set the valve clearances on number 3 cylinder and spun it over with the plugs out incase id got it rong somehow. all seemed well so did a compression test for fun and then put the plugs back in and she was fairly happy, went for a spin around the block to warm her up, reset all the tappets and she's happy as larry :P so all in all, a pain free excercise :y: here i was thinking she'd broken....silly me, doubting a 4k lol Quote
love ke70 Posted February 1, 2006 Author Report Posted February 1, 2006 lol thanks :y: yeah seemed alright to me 1: 160 2: 160 3: 145 4: 160 I'm pretty happy with that theyre meant to be around the 160 arnt they, with a minimum of 120? Quote
madrolla68 Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 He mentioned "redline in first" I reckon the tappets were loose and add a bit of valve bounce / float and *pop* Still reckon you should take it to a mechanic and get them to see if there been any other damage too :y: Yeah my BAD should have read it better Quote

Rolla__Boy Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 I had a KE55 that I got for free with a months rego....and the oil light used to come on, so knowing shitty old 4K's, I assumed it had no oil, so I threw some in, light kept comin on, so I put more in....never bothering to check the oil level, basically because I didn't care...anyways, this kept happening, until such time as it started pouring smoke out the exhaust...lots and lots of smoke...so at this point, I checked a few things. Turned out the plug on the sender for the oil light was loose, so I plugged it on properly..and the light stopped coming on hehe, so it was back to happy motoring, then the oil light started coming on again, and I assumed (stupid stupid stupid) that the plug was loose again....How wrong I was...anyway, I drove it for a few days like this... Cruising along a few days later, at 100km/h and a bit (top speed) and had music blaring...looked down, and suddenly I was going 20 clicks slower....still with foot flat...thought hmm oh well, kept going, kept getting slower...BOOM!!!!! Smoke starts pouring out of the engine bay...DOH!! Open the bonnet, and there is a nice little column of smoke pouring out the side of the block...great. I also boiled one with the SC on it, and it seized....but that is the only 2 in 9 years, that have ever actually stopped on me....and for those that know how I drive...will know that is a good effort on Toyota's part Quote
love ke70 Posted February 2, 2006 Author Report Posted February 2, 2006 Re :P - Jiff in the oil cap area :P i don't understand..... :) My Pushrod Fell Out that's funny. least it was something simple. lol yeah, when i pulled the rocker cover off and saw it there i was like...wtf is that thing lol. quick look in the book and i was like ooooh so thats a pushrod  just put it back where its supposed to be and no one gets hurt :) rolla boy, no one said they would run without oil :) top effort tho, driving for a few days with the oil light on b4 it blew good ol' toyotas :y: Quote
Guest Brad Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 How can you people redline a K motor? I can't get the guts to do it, How can I treat my baby with such disrespect? I treat it nicely 3,000rpm gear change and shes fine, whats the need to redline it? Apart from looking like a total tryhard in the process? Brad Quote

Brad Because we can :y: And Nick...you are spot on, driving them like a nanna is bad, they hate u if you do that to them. And if your engines only last a year Nick....you aren't driving them hard enough, mine used to last a year WITH 10psi and redline and boiling daily :P A carton? Jesus you are gettin ripped off hehehe I don't only think the K engines are disposable...the whole cars are, you bend something important...$50=new shell...and your done :P Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 Well....ok fine. But if you bent the chassis....please tell me you wouldn't get it straightened Quote

Brad i can't believe you just called me a try hard. havnt you ever heard of the concept of peak power, thats at 6000 rpm on a stock 4k if i changed gears at 3000 with the trailer on, i would be flat foot trying to maintain speed, they are not torque monsters so i don't change gears at the same stage as you do in a fowlcoon. (which is a torque monster) they love the revs :P Quote
