GeorgeG5 Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 After a long search for a Japanese "oldtimer" I got this last Thursday. It's a 1982 Toyota Corolla KE70 2 door wagon in more or less original state. Engine is 4K - 1.3l, carburettor, 8-valve OHV with maybe 55 hp. It was left standing outside a garage for three years so it's in quite a rough condition, but it fired right up! Plans are complete overhaul and maybe 4AGE blacktop swap sometime in the future. I'll have to take a look at starter later today because it doesn't work. I've put a new battery in, it takes some juice (lights on the cluster dim a bit when trying to start) but nothing happens. _MG_5952 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr _MG_5949 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr _MG_5958 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr _MG_5957 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr _MG_5959 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr _MG_5961 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr _MG_5962 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr _MG_5965 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr _MG_5950 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr _MG_5991 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr _MG_5993 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr the only worse spot is on the drivers side just under pedals... _MG_5994 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr and door _MG_5996 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr somebody was playing with seatbelts so I'll have to take a look at this... _MG_5998 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr and finally a shot of a whole engine bay _MG_5999 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr I finally managed to get the rolla on ramps so I could take a look at the starter. I got it out after almost an hour of trying as it's in the most ʞ©$ɟed up place. The pinion goes out, but doesn't spin, not even when connected directly to the battery. I got the starter motor apart, changed one of the brushes that was too small and renewed the collector surface. Now the pinion spins, but only when connected directly to power source. So I took apart the solenoid as there was no connection between the + cable terminal and the one that powers the starter motor. That was quite easy to fix, but it still doesn't work. The solenoid pulls out the pinion, but it doesn't spin. My friend confirmed the solenoid is shot so I have to order a new one _MG_6194 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr _MG_6200 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr _MG_6202 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr _MG_6205 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 Welcome to the club, your steering wheel is on the wrong side. I love it when someone want to rescue a Rolla, I hope to see this brought back to life. And yeah, how shitty is it getting to the starter motor. :abuse: Quote
7shades Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 Welcome... I think you may be our first member from Czech Republic? Quote
GeorgeG5 Posted July 10, 2012 Author Report Posted July 10, 2012 Thanks! The starter motor was a real pain in the ass... These cars are quite rare over here so it doesn't surprise me I'm the first one. This one's probably the only KE70 wagon in my country Quote
GeorgeG5 Posted July 12, 2012 Author Report Posted July 12, 2012 finally got to order the solenoid today and it was cheaper than expected... I was told it will be somewhere around $70 and the final price is just $20 for a brand new one Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted July 12, 2012 Report Posted July 12, 2012 I just noticed the 'fuel tank' in the engine bay :D Quote
GeorgeG5 Posted July 13, 2012 Author Report Posted July 13, 2012 oh, yeah... the guy I bought her from told me he put it there just before I arrived so he doesn't have to put too much gas in the tank... that is rusty as hell so it's probably better like this :D Quote
7shades Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 If I have to pay more than $20 for ANY part on my AE71, I become very, very annoyed :) Quote
GeorgeG5 Posted July 16, 2012 Author Report Posted July 16, 2012 It may be common in Australia, but not so much here in central Europe :) d'oh _MG_6217 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr Quote
Jono.C Posted July 16, 2012 Report Posted July 16, 2012 I like this for several reasons 1; I'm jelly. Everyone got better front ends that us :( 2; This thread actually has great spelling and grammar, Plus you have a good camera. This makes me happy!!! Look forward to the updates :jamie: Quote
7shades Posted July 16, 2012 Report Posted July 16, 2012 Speaking of front ends... I might just have some of those bezels and park light lenses here... Brand new Quote
Jono.C Posted July 16, 2012 Report Posted July 16, 2012 ^ Seriously, I'm start to get pretty envious of you lot, your cars, and your shenanigans. Quote
GeorgeG5 Posted July 16, 2012 Author Report Posted July 16, 2012 Thanks! I'm still not sure if I like those headlights or if I should get the quad lamps... Since the new solenoid still isn't here, I'll have another round of dealing with the insulation or whatever is the stuff on the floor called later today. Quote
GeorgeG5 Posted July 17, 2012 Author Report Posted July 17, 2012 Got the passenger's side and rear part of the driver's side (this one's LHD, just to clarify) done and this is the only bad spot. The rest is just fine. Now comes the worst part, the space under drivers seat and footwell. _MG_6226 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr And the solenoid finally came in today. woo _MG_6222 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr I assembled the starter just to find out the solenoid doesn't work... quick check confirmed that I need to adjust the rod so it connects the two top terminals once it's on. Now it worked just fine, I put it back together and nothing... the solenoid works, but the starter motor doesn't spin... It decided to give up just as I got the new solenoid... ʞ©$ɟ me _MG_6229 by GeorgeCZ, on Flickr Quote
