popandwar Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 Hey, I've had a bit of a search around and can't really find anything to answer my question. Is there any way to tell the condition of in my case a pedal box and a gearbox when they are off of the car? I can only assume moving the gear stick around in the gearbox or something and checking for oil leaks? Anything else I could check? Thanks for any help, Logan. Quote
bruce Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 With the pedal box check the pivot points and any side play in pedals. I don't think they could wear out much. Could check the brake light switch is included. With the gearbox have a go at turning the input shaft in each gear. Take note of how it turns, if it feels like a grindy bearing noise, or if it's firm and tight. Probably don't know the real condition until it's in a car to test it out. 1 Quote
popandwar Posted June 21, 2012 Author Report Posted June 21, 2012 thanks bruce, "if it feels like a grindy bearing noise" I'm guessing means bad. does that mean firm and tight is good? Quote
Jono.C Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 Take the drain bung out and see how much metal shavings come out in the oil Quote
popandwar Posted June 21, 2012 Author Report Posted June 21, 2012 just read an article and someone described the gearbox as tight, so I'm guessing good haha. Thanks jono, I'll give it a shot, hope it doesn't get too messy in the sellers driveway haha Quote
