Not sure what the road legal limit is. Somewhere around 90dB probably.

Some of the cars I've heard at Archy are way louder than that too...

keep in mind that measuring sound is a VERY fine art.

the difference between a proper measurement, and a dodgy measurement could be the difference between angling the microphone slightly wrong, and this could make a massive difference to your reading.

remember that an increase of 3db, is doubling the sound level. so there is a MASSIVE difference between 90db and 96db.

and it really matters what you are comparing it to.

i think the ADR is something like X db @ 1m behind at 45degree (don't quote me)

if the police man just shoves the microphone any which way, he will get a reading that will be wrong.

also background noise plays a huge role as well.

i did a 1 course at uni on acoustics, and holy dooly its complicated.

I was once a sound engineer to be...

Measuring sound accurately isn't really something you can do without the help of an anechoic chamber...At uni, a room we were all quietly sitting in had an SPL of like 50dB with a quiet air conditioner running in it so where you actually take your measurement plays a very large part in what the final outcome is going to be. And like you said Dave, distance from the source and what you're comparing it to.

I'd say it would be quite hard to get an accurate measurement in the pit lane at a race track. Or on the side of a busy road for that matter...

If your car is on the line db wise, even a cloudy day will have an effect on the meters at the track.

I used to take a different set of pipes to Amaroo just in case of clouds.

I'm considering doing a side pipe on our khanacross car. 4age at full throttle with headers and about a metre of exhaust is nearly 130dB on a cheapy dB meter. So, I wouldn't put too much faith in that figure, but it causes immediate and lasting ear ache even when standing about 10m away from the car.

You're talking about celerity yeah??

Swampy, I'll be wearing a helmet and maybe even another form of protection for my ears but it may not be kind to other's ears...I'll try it out and see how it goes anyway.

Love that car of yours too by the way. Well both actually, the 86 and the khana car. Good stuff!!

I got told it was illegal on a track .. hmmm...

In all honesty I can't stand the sound of side pipes, or anything without any sort of resonator for that matter..
