Jrad Posted June 10, 2012 Report Posted June 10, 2012 I've gone to school with a girl and her mum has owned a Ke70/AE71 Spirit from new. This is a genuine 1 owner car, with history and service to the T. They bought it from Toyota in 1984. All the spirit add-ons and original stickers. It's well looked after. Relativity rust free, actually. And untouched in every manner. They're kind of aware of what they have, but aren't. If that makes sense. I know "how long is a piece of string?" and "it's worth what someone will pay for it" But what are the ball-park figures atm for something like this? Would $3,000 to the right person be unreasonable if they were to put it up for sale? The prices some people are asking for dirty old KEs are ridiculous right now! Quote
LittleRedSpirit Posted June 10, 2012 Report Posted June 10, 2012 I'm sure someone would pay it these days. What's the mileage? It seems everyone has a perfect example if you ask them, have you seen and driven the car? Unless its in the best of shape its not worth 3k. Condition is key. At the end of the day its a stock 80s car, so you need to not consider and pay for the potential, but what value is in the car right there and then for the buyer. Just because it has log books for some services doent make it perfect either. A full service history for a 30 year old car requires a filing cabinet worth of documents. As provenance I would want every 10000klms or 6 month max spaced services by a reputable mechanic that filled the book out and actually read the procedures and had enough of a brain to do things that weren't part of the schedule if need be. Id expect receipts for a few sets of tyres, a few wheel alignments, some suspension work(it will have needed bushings and tie rod ends a couple of times over at least) perfect boots on the steering rack, no rust or dents, good rubber seals that lock the water out around the windows. It should have used a few sets of points and a coil or two, basically unless someone has gone to the extent of making sure every part on the car is perfectly maintained then its cannot be worth 3 grand. To put it into perspective you can have any common mid to late 90s car for this kind of money now, so consider the condition of the 30 year old thing carefully. If the value isnt there, don't spend it. 1 Quote
ATOYOTA Posted June 10, 2012 Report Posted June 10, 2012 I paid 4 grand for my stock KE70 with a list of issues and without rego/roady, but because there wasn't so much as a flake of rust and the guy had done such a stellar job on the paint I was happy to pay the price. Quote
CorollaFan Posted June 10, 2012 Report Posted June 10, 2012 Littleredspirit is spot on..........just because people are advertising for these ridiculous prices doesn't mean there getting it. If it was me i wouldn't pay more than $2000 and if would have to be damn clean. Quote
Jrad Posted June 10, 2012 Author Report Posted June 10, 2012 I hadn't planned to buy this, it was more some information for the owners. And I would agree with you also LittleRedSpirit (funny, because it's a little red spirit we're talking about!) I haven't had a personal experience with the car, but I do know the owners and I would be lead to believe it has been well looked after. As I said, the prices people are asking are pretty damn crazy at the moment. And the problem with selling something like this, is that the cars still aren't quite worth something to collectors, and it would more of a collector's piece. As for paying $4,000 for a rustless example. I guess that was your choice, but I wouldn't have for something stock. I paid $1000 for mine with a pretty bad rust repair in the rear and rusted wheel arches, but fixed them myself (my dad's a panel beater so it was a proper job. Not just bog!) I guess it all boils down to what someone is willing to pay! Thanks for that LittleRed Quote
