Torque steer in a front wheel drive is embarrasing :)

Howdy,

I've had my car for three weeks now and I've got a stupid question: Torque steer in a front wheel drive, yes it's super embarrasing, but what can you do about it?

I thought about LSD, but have no idea what's involved in it, work wise and $$$, and I'd have to wait until the warranty runs out.

I'm trying to learn when to change gears so it doesn't happen, but occasionally I scare myself sh*tless when one hands changing gears and the other is trying to keep the car in a straight line.

It's especially scary when you're going through the twisties and double de clutching and it happens.

but that means you can't do hard launches very well.

it comes with the territory of having a forced induction fwd car, not that i would turn my nose up at it :y:

I guarantee you'll get used to it Lesley.......scared me s#!tless the first few times too, but you learn to go with it! :P Just keep a REAL firm grip on the wheel, and maybe start doing some weights to make your arm stronger :y: Its all part of the fun of owning a sportivo :P

LOL :P I've been slowly getting used to it, it's not so bad now that I've come to expect it. I think I have built up some muscles in my arms!!! I'm starting to take off slower and then give it a bit of a kick then change up and repeat until I'm in third when I zoom off.

I was given "drag" lessons on Friday night (kids in the back seat) and I was getting nervous so wasn't taking off properly, everyone was giving me sh*t, it was very frustrating! I gave up and went home... then returned later by myself and didn't do too badly :)

It feels like its gonna rip the wheel out of your hand hokey! Scarey at first, but then you learn to tame the beast! Also a sign that your car has a bit of power which everyone likes to know! :P

I wanna see ya shifting through the gears like i did on the test drive Lesley :y: First and second are the fun gears.....third ya just hang on and let it spool up (so i've been told of course lol) :dance SO have ya got any speeding tickets yet??? :P

when you accelerate, and you puttin a lot of torque thru the wheels one will spin quicker than the other coz of flex in the drive shafts (whatever they call them) coz the diff in a fwd is rarely dead in the middle, so what happens is the car pulls to one side quite seriously when you give it plenty of right foot...

basically car trys to aim itself at who you are dragging, lol

Daniel,

I think I have to get a little more used to the car before I can manage that :y: Although, I did do a nice change from 2nd to 5th that I was quite happy with.

oh, I have a question for you. You know when you rev it upto about 5500rpms and it makes that psssshhhh noise? What is it? The reason I ask is that since I've been Nanna-ing the car I've not had the black smoke...until tonight, I whipped through the gears upto about 120klms (I noticed how fast I was going and backed off) and there was a HUGE cloud of black smoke, hubby and daughter with in their car behind me and said it smelt like fresh mandarines *yummy*.

Oh, tonight I had a bit of a drag with a *gosh, can't remember what it was* and I gave it a boot in first front wheels were spinning like crazy, but I managed to keep it straight and managed to chirp into 2nd *first time in the rolla*!

No speeding tickets yet...touch wood

The "psssshhhh" noise is just the blow off valve letting go! (it sticks up near the intercooler piping on the RHS of the engine bay - sticking off some rubber piping - should be pointing up). It must've been blocked for a while cause it only really started working a few months before i sold it! I think the black smoke has something to do with it getting too much fuel when its on boost......thats what we thought it might be? The few times it did it with me was after you give it a bit, back off, then gas on again.....didnt seem to do it when ya didnt gas on straight away.

You got the pod back on it, or ya just leaving it with the standard piping? The turbo chatter from the pod is awesome i reckon and always got alot of "wtf" looks :y: Though there's something about the standard piping that makes it seem classy too....a couple of months on, a couple of months off i reckon lol :P

Now, an important question.....did ya win the drag? Hope you only went to 60 though :) Used to munch commodores and the odd wrx (old ones mind you). When the wheels used to spin it'd "suspension tramp" and feel like the dash was gonna fall in your lap :P The springs & shocks sorted that out though! Feels great though feeling it go nuts when the boost kicks in! Congrats on your first "second geary" too :)

Hope you're enjoying it!!!! Done much/anything to it since ya got it?

you can get rid of most of the torque steer, but it requires stupid amounts of caster on the front wheels, then you need power steering to help turn the car because of the caster.

this why most FWD cars have PWS, 7 degress + is what you'd be aiming for.

i've seen FWD over 15 degress to fight torque steer.

putting a LSD into it will make it worse.

Ok Daniel - that's what I thought it was, so does that mean in my ordinary Nanna driving, the blow off valve isn't blowing off? Perhaps this is why the black smoke happens only when I give a boot (and the pssshtttt happens) then back off?? I thought the turbo kicks in about 3000rpm? so would the BOV be quieter or not kick in until I'm up around the 5000 mark???

Haven't got the pod on, perhaps I'll put it on....what do I need to do?

Of course I won the drag, I wouldn't be bragging otherwise!!! Today I flew past a WRX on takeoff, maybe he wasn't trying...never mind it felt good :)
