BUZ440 Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 Hi all, was wondering if anyone on here is running the above and on the street, If they have a pic and how does the setup hold up, either street, track or drags? I know it is similar to caltracs, but with coil overs tied to the back of the links As 4 links can't get passed these days, and looking at options Quote
kickn5k Posted May 10, 2012 Report Posted May 10, 2012 (edited) Leaf spring + coilover Carlos? Ohwhatanissanfeeling has a photo or two of his caltrac setup in his rides thread I'm pretty sure. Edited May 10, 2012 by kickn5k Quote
BUZ440 Posted May 10, 2012 Author Report Posted May 10, 2012 Leaf spring + coilover Carlos? Ohwhatanissanfeeling has a photo or two of his caltrac setup in his rides thread I'm pretty sure. Two links on the diff, connected to a crossmember welded where the front of the leafs start, and have a bracket on the links so that coil overs sit on and tie into the OEM spring bracket on the body Quote
19914afc Posted May 10, 2012 Report Posted May 10, 2012 Looks pretty easy, you can get/make those brackets and lower adjustable arms are readily available for ae86. Quote
BUZ440 Posted May 10, 2012 Author Report Posted May 10, 2012 You can pick them up at a great price from the engineers, Majority of applications are heavy v8s Seeing if someone has it in a rolla Quote
JDM55 Posted May 10, 2012 Report Posted May 10, 2012 ill be doing a set of caltracs in the near future so ill let you know how they turn out, realy need to stiffen the rear and stop axle trap ,shes sloppy seconds at the moment lol Quote
BUZ440 Posted May 10, 2012 Author Report Posted May 10, 2012 Cheers ryan, I am aware of caltracs / tramp rods Just 2 link setup with coil overs, I know how much adjustment you get with a 4 link setup and how effective it is, Is the 2 link the similar? On paper it seems it is, but want to know if anyone has or knowledge Quote
towe001 Posted May 10, 2012 Report Posted May 10, 2012 The two rods would just stop the axle (or diff) from rolling over and causing the leaves to wind up. A similar setup http://www.bigflea.com/corolla/index.cfm?ContentID=109&Nav2ID=7 - and scroll down to Traction Bar (just after Differential Clearance) The setup uses only the one rod. Would be able to possibly get some adjustability into the suspension but you wouldn't get the same as in a four-link. If you can get a pair of coil-overs under the backend, you'll be able to ditch all the extra leaves and just run the big single leaf which is used only for locating the diff. Suspending the diff would come from the coil-overs. Another option you could look into is a leading and trailing four link. Think of the typical four link setup but the arms replace the leaves, the leading arm starts where the leaves where bolted and connects below the diff, the trailing arm connects to the top of the diff and ends around the same spot where the leaves end at the hangers. Easier to setup but it will come at a cost of both arms running in different circles causing the diff spin so to speak. Quote
cuzzo Posted May 11, 2012 Report Posted May 11, 2012 Two links on the diff, connected to a crossmember welded where the front of the leafs start, and have a bracket on the links so that coil overs sit on and tie into the OEM spring bracket on the body I like that even without coil-overs Quote
BUZ440 Posted May 11, 2012 Author Report Posted May 11, 2012 I like that even without coil-overs thats what I'm wanting to know how it hooks up with coilovers, I might just look at a 4 link with out leafs, then take the top arms off and leafs back on for street, but wanting some wider rubber up back Quote
love ke70 Posted May 11, 2012 Report Posted May 11, 2012 your talking to the wrong people, i know of a 64 falcon getting a 4 link at the moment thats going to be street legal with a 1J. Have you consulted an engineer? cheers, andy Quote
BUZ440 Posted May 12, 2012 Author Report Posted May 12, 2012 Hey Andy, Yes I have spoken to 1 engineer and 1 fabricator, and awaiting to hear back from 2 others The car that I'm intending on putting this into advise that they will not sign off on and will requie the necessary fabrication of course which is deemed too extensive, I'm happy to pay for the mods etc and know about the NCOP, Given that the car is is pre ADR26 (i think??) its a bit conflicting, and getting it on the street might be a problem, so was looking at the 2 link option, and wondering how people went with this, as opposed to caltracs, i know this works on the same principle and stopping the diff twisting, the pinion in the rolla has hit the floor a couple of times under full power, haha But with coilovers how does it go off the line Quote
towe001 Posted May 12, 2012 Report Posted May 12, 2012 I'd say it'd go a bit better off the line since the diff wouldn't be able to wind up as much (if any). Neighbour across the street was running coilovers on his falcon ute that he had for sale. But it was for load carrying not traction control. If it was me, i'd ditch the extra leaves and just use the main leaves for locating the diff and use the coilovers to get the spring rates i want. But than again on me wagon i've been pondering the idea of ditching the extra leaves, keeping the main leaves, using a similar setup to caltracs and running airbags. But than again i'm not after performance and speed. Quote
BUZ440 Posted May 12, 2012 Author Report Posted May 12, 2012 Ok Rob that might be an option, relocate the main leafs towards the diff centre, and use custom coilovers to sit and position in the OEM top brackets, and caltracs on this, seems mini tubbed is lookin more fruitful and get signed off Quote
kickn5k Posted May 12, 2012 Report Posted May 12, 2012 If it was me, i'd ditch the extra leaves and just use the main leaves for locating the diff and use the coilovers to get the spring rates i want. This is how I'd do it too. Tubbing the 30 Carlos, or is this your changed circumstance?? Quote
