I have an AE80 hatch that is well, showing signs of wear. It is blowing smoke and I think it is the valve stem seals and if it is not I'm going to change the motor, I'm not after performance I just want a newer motor I can get from a wreck rather than buy an old 4AGE have power I'm not going to use, having to upgrade the brakes and struts on the rear. I could have a motor lined up for 650 with 45,000 km on the clock, it's either 1.3 or 1.5 have to double check and I think it would suit what I am looking for quite nicely. The orientation looks the same. I'm wondering what the issues from changing the side of the exhaust to front and then running it under the car is going to be, and has anyone considered doing this. Any help will be greatly appreciated

There shouldn't be any problems with the exhaust as it would be very much the same as a 4age set up, I haven't been under a starlet so can't say for sure. If its the 4efe motor I would assume it would bolt up to a 4a gearbox? if anyone can clarify that would be good.

you would need the complete wiring loom and ECU, I assume you would know that! Or you could opt for 4afe from an ae92?

Twincam16seca thanks for your help, was aware of the loom. the reason why I wanted to go with the starlet option is maybe low k second hand instead of obtaining a motor having the cost of rebuild and then conversion, keeping my brakes and suspension stock hopefully 1.6 to 1.5 and just to be different. my only engine conversion I have done is 4.9L v8 to a 5.8L in a falcon same setup block and ancillary wise, just bore and stroke differences. 4AFE is still on the cards though, I just don't really want to spend $2600 on a 4A rebuilding it... but then if the 4A breaks down on the side of the road it's either run out of fuel or it's the BIM 024 ignition module on the distributor. Hoping it is only the valve stem seals at the moment so I can have a good think about it and save the cash.
