altezzaclub Posted March 30, 2012 Report Posted March 30, 2012 Nearly half that budget could go on a pair of DCOE Webers and a manifold, so there is not a lot left for a rebore and a crank grind, lightened flywheel, maybe the crank lightened, a full balance, new pistons, new bearings, new cam chain setup, a cam grind, a porting job and a high compression skim, a set of extractors and a new exhaust.... It all depends on how lucky you are at getting the carbs, if you can get machining done at "mates rates", and if you can buy parts at wholesale. It doesn't really cost any more to make it a race motor than a well-built street motor as you do the same things to it. Did you keep the hydraulic tappets Philbey? How much grunt do you reckon? Quote
crunk81us Posted April 1, 2012 Author Report Posted April 1, 2012 not what i was expecting.. so ur telling me, that i can't buy a writen off silvia with almost everything i need to do the conversion for $2k? I can use an angle grinder, welder, mulitmetre and soldering iron! I don't want it on the road.. EVER. k series engine? pfft. I wasnt asking for a price for some mechanic (or more likely his apprentice which he charges full price for) to do the conversion. The engine doesnt have to be like new.. sigh. never mind. Quote
Willis Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 You won't get everything you need for the conversion in a halfcut. If you think you're going to pull off an SR20DET conversion for 2k you're dreaming. Buy a halfcut, see how far you get. Quote

I bought an FJ20et for dads 1600 it cost $2k. It came with very low km engine(I pulled it apart and checked), box, turbo and "fit kit"(complete front end minus struts). That was just the start of it, it cost a further $3G to complete plus engineers and I did everything myself. So maybe add $20-100 per hour on top of that to have someone else do it. Lol at the snicker at the "k" motor. My old S/C setup made 100rwkw and in a car not much lighter than a ke20 was quick enough to scare mildly modded wrx's and e36 m3's through the tight stuff. I'd go SR(as much as they sound like a tractor engine) they are pretty light and make good power. Quote

Buy a halfcut, see how far you get. totally agree with this one.. i highly doubt you will get a half cut for 2k and if you do, let me know and ill buy one with you. no matter weather you know how to weld or whatever, you still need to buy/build a diff which is about $1500-2500.. at the end of it, if your going to do a proper job like having coilovers, and the right driveline, with a well built motor, the car will be at the 10k mark when your done.. Willis Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 He could get a halfcut for 2k, he just won't pull of the conversion for 2k. Quote
Jordain Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 $2500 for a beams.... 15,000 for the rest of the conversion doing everything myself... Wish I bought something already built and saved my $$ Quote

altezzaclub Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 I don't want it on the road.. EVER. Well, that makes it cheaper- Buy the halfcut for $2K, drop the stock motor and box straight in, fit a radiator somehow, make up the mounts yourself, then all you have to do is sort a diff and driveshaft. Should make a mean paddock-basher. You don't need to worry about brakes or suspension or roaworthy/scrutineers, so it becomes pretty simple. Quote
styler Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 The theroy of power to weight is good with a ke corolla and an engine conversion but it's not that simple to just hack, grind and weld it all together. Just do it and see how you go really... But the first problems you are going to hit literally is the gearbox and gearstick in the tunnel, the sump on the crossmember and swaybar and possibly the rocker cover on the bonnet. Best advice is see if someone has done it before and how, then at least you will know if its possible and might be able to see the work involved to do it. Quote
philbey Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 (edited) sigh. never mind. Sounds like you already had an answer in mind anyway. Edited April 1, 2012 by philbey Quote
ke70dave Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 The only way to get a price is to-do up a budget. I've recently done one for a ke70, full brake and suspension up grade including rebuilt engine diff wheels tyres. Not much change from 15k. 5k of that was engine. Quote
Willis Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 5k of that was engine. 5k is a more realistic figure for an engine conversion alone. Quote
19914afc Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 OK so my T18 so far has cost me - Around $1000 for a very good shell (sold off engine T series diff and few other bits originally was 2k when I first bought it) The diff I have built my self ended up costing just under 1k (including disc brakes) It is a hilux G series Diff - $400 Rotors - $150 Calipers - $150 Caliper brackets - $60 Plus the time it took me to cut all the mounts of an old diff I got for free, clean them up and weld them all on, and still need to make a tailshaft and get it balanced. Engine ended costing me absolutely nothing! $0, FREE! But it took 2 months to get the money back for it as I bought a whole Lexus LS400 with a 4L 1uzfe for $1200 then pulled the engine out and sold off every thing else cheap so got a free engine. Then I decided to get a good gearbox setup, which consits of a Richmond close ratio and 1:1 5th gear 5 speed box with custom bell housing, flywheel and 2 clutches 1 from a nascar the other from a V8 supercar, This all cost 2.5K though so not cheap but because the engine ended up costing me nothing I didn't mind. Then the suspension - Coilovers and rear shocks - $1300 Front brakes - $700 (T3 wilwood setup) bigger swaybars - $200 So there is 2k there as well. Fuel setup - Tank from work from a yaris $Not sure yet ill see how much Fuel cell foam $not much maybe $50 Surge tank, lift pump and fuel pump $200 Roll cage - about 1.5k Then there was about another 1K in other little bits and pieces. Willis Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 Well done on the 1UZ but this dude's talking about buying a halfcut and going from there. Will end up being much more expensive. Building a car isn't something that you can do for free. It will either cost you alot of money or alot of your time AND your money. Quote
