Hey all,

Now i know there are a few of these posts going around but mine is a different topic from what I'm reading.

I have a 4k-c KE55 that is misfiring. Two weeks ago i replaced a broken ballast resistor(voltage limiter beside coil) and was sweet after that. Now is becoming a little more reluctant to start. It once started perfectly everytime but now need to hold the ignition on and plant the accelerator to start it and even then conks out randomly. But once started is when the real issues occur. When driving off and revving up a little to engage the engine to release the clutch, it pitter patters like a misfire and darker smoke comes out of the exhaust when this occurs. So higher revving and slowly taking off gets me going but low revs in 1st and 2nd while driving it misses terribly and is getting worse. Under power over 400rpms it is fine and quite punchey but lower revs it is a total mess.

I doubt that the ballast resistor could cause any issues here as everywhere i called said they only carried the same one(listing) for every typre of car that needs one. But then again i don't know much to do with electrics on cars so i could most likely be wrong.

I have instaled a new alternator in the last 3 months which is fine and battery is completely charged. In the fuel i use Valve Saver Fluid and standard Unleaded.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

where do you start, :hmm:

could be plugs no good,

may have a dead lead,

coil break down under load,

broken wire,

points may not be opening propley,

bob weight in dizzy need adjusting,

check timing and dwell,

could even be a worn cam or adjust valves,

bad lot of fuel ,

even water in fuel,

blocked fuel filter,

adjust choke if automatic,

carby rebuild,

check compression for head gasket,

go from there and see how you go :)

Darker exhaust on low revs sounds like running rich, maybe start looking at carby, choke etc.

Give it a tune to start with-

Check tappet gaps.

Drive it and push the clutch in while turning it off and stop, so you get to see the plugs as they were under load. Check plug gaps & colour. Check compressions while the plugs are out.

Check points gap and timing (with a timing light,) and make sure the timing advances as you rev it.

Check the idle mixture, and make sure turning the idle screw has an effect. If it doesn't do anything you have a carb problem. Make sure the choke is coming right off, as Oldie mentioned.

Once you know they are working as they should, its probably fastest to dyno it to find if it is coil or leads or plug or carb that is breaking down under load. That will pretty well cover the list from me-n-d-boy above.
