scooba Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 Hi all, I have the option to buy a tailshaft for the manual conversion I'm doing. I have the choice of either a one piece, or two piece shaft. Is one better than the other or are they much of a muchness? I've worked on Escorts before and the two pieces were added to reduce vibration. Is it the same for Toyotas? Cheers, Steve. Quote
Willis Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 If it works on one, it's likely to work on another. But I would think that a one piece would be the cheaper of the two, no? Quote
styler Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 Yeah I thought 2pc was just for vibration, also reduces unsprung weight I guess... but 1 pc for strength and cost seems be the way to go, have seen 1 pc aluminum and carbon fibre tailshafts as well to reduce weight but pricey Quote

Willis Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 Styler, wouldn't a tailshaft be sprung weight? Quote
styler Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 (edited) Upsprung weight I reckon Edited March 15, 2012 by styler Quote
ke70dave Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 much of a muchness really i think on the lower level of performance. ke70/ae71 panel vans came with 1 peice. all other ke70's 2 peice. both seem to work perfectly fine if they are balanced. i think if i put a 1 peice in over a 2 peice i would include a tailshaft hoop for my own peice of mind. don't want my car to turn into a pole volter. But plenty of cars are 1 peice with no tailshaft hoop (utes, 4wd's etc) for a manual conversion on a standard car, i would just go with a good condition OEM setup. weather it be single or dual peice. BUZ440 Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 I would have thought that the two piece on the 70's where the torque tube, to stop the diff from, twisting as there are no top links, as oppose to the leaf spring setup, ????? Quote
scooba Posted March 15, 2012 Author Report Posted March 15, 2012 Hi guys, Thanks for the advice. Car will be standard for the time being, until I can afford more, but I don't think I'll go much past the old cams, carbs, compression and exhaust route. Oldskool rules! I used to have an 80's model 626, the rwd ones, believe me, two piece tailshafts will still make a car pole vault, just not as high. :sigh: Cheers, Steve Quote
